Configuring Layer 3 Hardware Forwarding of IPv4 Packets

Context

When there is more Layer 3 service traffic on a network, you can enable Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets to prevent IPv4 packet loss.

After Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets is enabled:

  • The switch can forward the packets with header checksum errors or unauthorized source IP addresses. The source addresses include the all-0 address, all-1 address, D-class addresses, E-class addresses, subnet broadcast addresses, and loopback addresses.
  • The switch does not forward the packets whose time to live (TTL) value is 0 or 1.
  • The switch discards the packets whose source MAC address and destination MAC address are the same.
  • The maximum number of ARP entries of the switch is reduced to 128 from 256.

Insufficient ACL resources will result in a failure to enable Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets.

The IPv4 Layer 3 hardware forwarding function cannot be configured with the SVF function at the same time.

NOTE:

Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets can be enabled only on the S2750EI, S5700-10P-LI-AC, and S5700-10P-PWR-LI-AC.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run assign forward-mode ipv4-hardware

    Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets is enabled.

    By default, Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets is disabled.

    After Layer 3 hardware forwarding of IPv4 packets is enabled, run the reboot command to restart the switch to make the configuration take effect.

  3. (Optional) Run set net-manager local-ip ip-address source-ip ip-address mask-length

    The CPCAR rate limit is configured only for the management protocol packets with the specified source and destination IP addresses.

Verifying the Configuration

Run the display forward-mode command to check the status of the Layer 3 hardware forwarding function for IPv4 packets.
