Application Scenarios of the DHCP Server

For unified management and control over network hosts, a DHCP server can be deployed on a network to allocate network parameters including IP addresses to the hosts, as shown in Figure 3-9.

A DHCP server is often configured in the following scenarios:
  • Hosts in small-scale locations, such as a restaurant, internet café, or private company, connect to the Internet through an egress gateway.

    To allocate network parameters including IP addresses to the hosts, the egress gateway can be configured as a DHCP server. This facilitates host management and control.

  • Departments on a campus network are assigned different network segments.

    To allow hosts on each network segment to dynamically obtain network parameters including IP addresses, a DHCP server can be configured. If the DHCP server is not located on the same network segment as the clients, a DHCP relay agent must be deployed.
