Application Scenarios of the DHCP Server

As shown in Figure 3-12, a DHCP server and multiple DHCP clients (such as PCs and portable computers) are deployed.

Generally, a DHCP server is used to assign IP addresses in the following scenarios:

  • On a large network, manual configurations take a long time and bring difficulties to centralized management over the entire network.

  • The number of hosts on the network is greater than that of available IP addresses. As a result, not every host has a fixed IP address. Many hosts need to dynamically obtain IP addresses through the DHCP server. In addition, network administrators hope that there is a limit to the number of users who go online at the same time.

  • Only a few hosts on the network require fixed IP addresses.
