DHCPv6 Server Allowing DHCPv6 Clients to Release Addresses

A DHCPv6 client needs to release the current IPv6 address when it goes offline. The following describes how a DHCPv6 server allows a DHCPv6 client to release an IPv6 address when no DHCPv6 relay agent exists on the network. If a DHCPv6 relay agent exists, the only difference is that the DHCPv6 relay agent processes DHCPv6 messages.   1. When a DHCPv6 client does not need to use the current IPv6 address, the DHCPv6 client sends a unicast Release message to the DHCPv6 server that allocates the IPv6 address. The Release message carries the DHCPv6 server's DUID, the DHCPv6 client's DUID, and the IPv6 address that needs to be released.
  2. After receiving the Release message, the DHCPv6 server checks the validity of the IPv6 address. If the check passes, the DHCPv6 server reclaims the IPv6 address and sends a unicast Reply message to the DHCPv6 client.
  3. After the DHCPv6 client receives the Reply message, the IPv6 address is released.
