Summary of IPv4 PIM Configuration Tasks

After PIM is configured, multicast data can be routed and forwarded on an IPv4 network. PIM includes multiple modes that apply to different scenarios. Table 4-2 lists IPv4 PIM configuration tasks.

Task Description

Configuring IPv4 PIM-DM

The PIM-DM configuration is simple, but multicast data will be periodically flooded throughout the network. Therefore, PIM-DM applies to small-sized networks with densely distributed receivers.

Configuring IPv4 PIM-SM

PIM-SM uses the ASM and SSM models to provide multicast services. In the ASM model, a multicast distribution tree (MDT) is set up by receivers actively joining the multicast group. PIM-SM needs to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, and register multicast sources. The ASM model applies to the large network where members are widely distributed. In the SSM model, PIM-SM sets up an SPT between a multicast source and members and does not need to maintain an RP, set up an RPT, or register multicast sources. The SSM model applies to the network where users know multicast source locations and directly request multicast data from a specified multicast source.

Configuring IPv4 Bidir-PIM

Bidir-PIM uses the ASM model to provide multicast services. Similar to the ASM model of PIM-SM, Bidir-PIM sets up an MDT by receivers actively joining the multicast group. Bidir-PIM needs to maintain an RP and set up an RPT. On a Bidir-PIM network, the switch connected to a user network segment does not switch from the RPT to SPT when receiving multicast data. The RPT is bidirectional, saving forwarding resources on the switch when multiple multicast sources exist. Bidir-PIM applies to the network where multiple multicast sources exist, such as multi-party call or video conferences and online games.
