802.1ag MAC Trace Fails

Common Causes

This fault is commonly caused by one of the following:

  • The destination node is not configured with the MEP of the same level as the MEP on the source node.

  • The MEP level of the intermediate node is the same as or higher than the MEP level of the source node.

  • The intermediate node does not have a MAC address entry for the destination node.

NOTE:

Perform the following operations on the device where the fault occurs and on the downstream MEP or MIP of the device.

Procedure

  1. Run the display this command in the MD view on the source and destination nodes to check whether MEP levels of the source and destination nodes are the same.

    • If so, go to step 2.

    • If not, delete the MD, run the cfm md command to create an MD, and set the MEP level of the destination node to be the same as that of the source node.

      • If the source node successfully traces the MAC address of the destination node based on 802.1ag, the fault has been rectified.

      • If the source node fails to trace the MAC address of the destination node based on 802.1ag, go to step 2.

  2. Run the display cfm mep command to check whether the MEP level of the intermediate node is the same as or higher than the MEP level of the source node.

    NOTE:

    When 802.1ag packets in a low-level MD enter a high-level MD, the 802.1ag packets will be discarded. 802.1ag packets in a high-level MD can traverse a low-level MD. 802.1ag packets in an MD cannot traverse the MD of the same level.

    • If not, go to step 3.

    • If so, delete the MD, run the cfm md command to create an MD, and change the MEP level on the intermediate node.

      • If the source node successfully traces the MAC address of the destination node based on 802.1ag, the fault has been rectified.

      • If the source node fails to trace the MAC address of the destination node based on 802.1ag, go to step 3.

  3. Run the display mac-address dynamic [ slot slot-id ] [ vlan vlan-id | interface interface-type interface-number ]* command to check whether the intermediate node has a MAC address entry for the destination node.

    If the intermediate node does not have a MAC address entry for the destination node, run the ping mac-8021ag command to enable the intermediate node to learn the MAC address of the destination node.

    If the source node successfully traces the MAC address of the destination node based on 802.1ag, the fault has been rectified.
