Using Backup PEs on an Auto VPN

Service Description

When a carrier provides services for tenants, backup PEs can be added so that more backup channels are set up for forwarding. This ensures that service traffic can be switched to a backup channel if the primary channel becomes unavailable.

Networking Description

On the network shown in Figure 1-6, PE1 and PE2 need to transmit data through the tunnel between them. If the link between PE1 and PE2 or between PE1 and the RR goes Down, the tunnel over the standby link between PE2 and PE3 is expected to transmit data.

To meet this requirement, the RR must add the Color extcommunity attribute of PE3 to the BGP routes sent from PE1. Specifically, the following configurations need to be performed on the RR:

  • Configure a route-policy named evpn_export_policy.
  • Specify PE1's RT and Color extcommunity attribute in the route-policy to filter routes.
  • Apply the Color value of PE3 to the matched routes (PE3's priority must be lower than PE2's priority).

In this manner, if the primary tunnel becomes unavailable, traffic is transmitted through the tunnel configured on PE3 because the routes carry the Color value of PE3.
