Overview of Auto VPN


Auto VPN is a VPN technology that is used to separate the overlay network from the underlying transport network and separate service network routes from transport network routes. Auto VPN uses a mechanism similar to BGP/MPLS IP VPN. It uses BGP extension and reachability information after extension to make underlying transport networks of different sites to interwork with each other. It controls protocols and advertises routes in a unified manner through multiple VPN capabilities of BGP to transfer tunnel encapsulation information between different site networks from the data plane to the control plane.

Figure 1-1 shows the basic usage scenario of auto VPN.

In a scenario where services are deployed on a carrier network, data needs to be transmitted between CEs. When the networking scale is large, the configuration becomes complex. Applying auto VPN can separate service network routes from transport network routes, ensuring rapid and secure data transmission. Auto VPN implements full connection of tunnels between sites, ensures data transmission on a service network, reduces the configuration workload, reduces the number of links on the network, and improves the network performance. Data is transmitted through tunnels, achieving rapid and secure transmission of service traffic and guaranteeing carrier services.

Auto VPN carries extended community attributes through BGP extension to control the network topology through routing policies. Auto VPN enables networks to have the plug-and-play function and be easy-to-extend.
