Updating a Veritas License

Updating a Veritas License

This section describes how to update a Veritas license. The Veritas license used during eSight installation is a demo license. After the server is delivered to the installation site, the demo license must be replaced with the formal Veritas license in time.

Prerequisites

You have obtained the formal Veritas license.

Context

You need to replace the demo licenses on both the active and standby eSight servers with formal Veritas licenses. Replace the Veritas licenses on the standby server, perform a active-standby switchover, and then replace the Veritas licenses on the active server.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the operating system as the root user.
  2. To back up all the license files in the /etc/vx/licenses/lic path, run the following commands:

    # mkdir -p /export/home/licenses

    # mv /etc/vx/licenses/lic/*.vxlic /export/home/licenses

  3. Run the following commands to switch to the directory where the vxlicinst file is stored:

    # cd /opt/VRTS/bin

  4. Run the following commands to update the VxVM License:

    # ./vxlicinst

    The following information is displayed:

Symantec License Manager vxlicinst utility version 3.02.33.0
Copyright (C) 1996-2007 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Enter your license key :

  5. Enter the newly applied license (for example, XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-X) and press Enter.

    • In the format, X indicates a letter or digit in the license key.
    • The newly applied license is in the key.txt file. Import the same license file to the active and standby servers.

  6. Run the following command to check whether the updated licenses take effect.

    # cd /opt/VRTS/bin

    # vxlicrep | grep "License Key"

Check whether the current license used by Veritas contains the content in the key.txt file. If yes, the updated license has taken effect.

  7. Run the following commands to stop the VCS service:

    # cd /opt/VRTSvcs/bin

    # hastop -local -force

  8. Run the following command to check whether the VCS service is stopped:

    # ps -ef|grep had

    The following information is displayed:

    root 27663 17299 0 00:31:00 pts/2 0:00 grep had

If the had and hadshadow processes are not displayed, the VCS service is successfully stopped. Otherwise, run the kill -9 process ID command to stop the associated processes.

  9. Run the following commands to restart the operating system:

    # sync;sync;sync;sync

    # shutdown -r now

  10. After the standby server is restarted, perform an active-standby switchover and repeat the preceding operations on the active server to replace the Veritas licenses on the active server.
  11. Perform an active-standby switchover to restore the normal active-standby relationship.
