Installing the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 Operating System

This section describes how to install the SUSE Linux operating system on the Huawei 2288H V5 server.

Prerequisites

  • The SUSE Linux quick installation disc (eSight_V300R010C00SPC300_SUSE12_SP2_x64.iso) is available.
  • The RAID has been configured for the server as planned. For details, see Configuring the RAID.
  • You have logged in to the server through the management port. For details, see Logging in to the SUSE Linux Server.

Procedure

  • The following operations need to be performed on both the active and standby eSight servers.
  • During the operating system installation, do not change Hostname. If it is changed, an installation error may occur.
  1. Start the installation program.

    1. On the toolbar of the Remote Virtual Console, click and choose Power Off.
    2. On the toolbar of the Remote Virtual Console, click to set the installation media.
      • To use the installation disc, select CD/DVD, select a drive letter from the drop-down list box, and click Connect.

      • To use the ISO image of the quick installation disc, select Image File, click Browse, add the image, and click Connect.

When Connect changes to Disconnect, the installation media has been connected to the server.

    3. Set the boot item.
      1. On the iBMC web management page, choose Configuration from the main menu.
      2. In the navigation tree on the left, choose Boot Device.
      3. Set the parameters listed in the following table.
        Table 6-8 System boot parameters

        Server Model

        Parameter

        Setting

        2288H V5

        Boot Mode

        Legacy BIOS

        Effective

        One-time

        Boot Medium

        DVD-ROM

    4. On the toolbar of the Remote Virtual Console, click and choose Power On.

  2. Select Linux-tradition-EN using up and down arrow keys and press Enter.

The system starts the automatic installation of the operating system. The entire process takes about 40 minutes. During the process, the system will automatically restart.

  3. After the installation is complete, the login page is displayed. Log in to the server as the root user and check the installation result.

The default password of the root user is Changeme123. To ensure system security, change the password immediately and keep it properly. For details, see "Password Change" in the eSight Maintenance Guide.

    1. Right-click in a blank area on the desktop and choose Open in Terminal from the shortcut menu.

      The Terminal window is displayed.

    2. Run the following command to check the operating system version and the patch version:

      # cat /etc/SuSE-release

In the preceding command, SuSE is case sensitive and must be entered in the correct format.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 (x86_64)
      VERSION = 12
      PATCHLEVEL = 2

The displayed information is described as follows:

      • If the command output contains (x86_64), the SUSE Linux operating system is a 64-bit operating system.
      • If the command output contains VERSION = 12, the operating system version is SUSE Linux 12.
      • If the command output contains PATCHLEVEL = 2, the patch version is SP2.

If the command output does not contain the preceding information, check the installation disc.

  4. Set the network for the operating system.

    1. Access the YaST2 Control Center page.

      # yast2

    2. In the YaST2 Control Center dialog box, choose System > Network Settings.

    3. In the Network Settings dialog box that is displayed, select the eth0 NIC, click Edit, and set it to the system IP address.

    4. In the Network Card Setup dialog box that is displayed, select Statically Assigned IP Address and set the IP address and subnet mask. Set IP Address to the system IP address of the server, and set Subnet Mask to that mapping the system IP address. For the IP address, see Collecting Information. Then click Next.

    5. In the Network Settings dialog box that is displayed, select Routing and set the default gateway. Set Default IPv4 Gateway to the gateway mapping the system IP address. For details, see Collecting Information.

    6. Click OK.

  5. After the operating system is installed through the quick installation disc, the default time zone is Asia > Shanghai. The local time and time zone can be changed based on the site requirements.

    1. Choose System > Date and Time.

    2. In the dialog box that is displayed, set the area and time zone.

    3. To change the time, click Change. In the dialog box that is displayed, set the date and time, and click Accept.
