Password Changing Scenarios and Policies

Password Changing Scenarios and Policies

A password is one of keys to log in to a system. If the password is disclosed or cracked, system security is threatened. To ensure user password security, use passwords complying with password strength requirements, change the passwords periodically, and do not use the same password in different scenarios.

Password Changing Scenarios

Frequently-seen scenarios where user passwords are changed are as follows:

  • Changing initial passwords
  • Password change after system maintenance handover
  • Regular password change

It is recommended that passwords be changed regularly to ensure system security. The change frequency can be customized. The recommended password change frequency is 90 days, but cannot be longer than a password validity period.

The password must be changed before it expires; otherwise, a system exception may occur.

Security hardening affects the password validity period of the operating system (OS) on the eSight. Change the OS user password before the preset password validity period ends.

Sequence and Time for Changing Passwords

  • There is no sequence requirements for changing the eSight user passwords.
  • For users who take effect only after the eSight restarts, you are advised to change their password during off-peak hours, for example, 0:00-4:00.
  • The interval between each password change must be greater than 5 minutes.

Password Complexity Requirements

You are advised to use a password meeting the following complexity requirements:

  • The password cannot contain the user name in normal or reverse order.
  • Password length requirements:
    • eSight: The password ranges from 8 to 32 characters.
    • Maintenance Tools: The password ranges from 10 to 32 characters.
  • No character can exceed 3 occurrences in the password.
  • The password must contain at least one uppercase letter, lowercase letter and digit.
  • The password must be different from the previous 3 passwords.
NOTE:
  • Due to the restrictions of the SUSE Linux operating system, no matter whether the operating system is hardened, no complexity restrictions will apply when you change your own password or a common user password as the root user. However, to ensure system security, ensure that a new user password after password change meets the complexity requirements.
  • The device-related passwords must meet complexity requirements of the eSight and devices.
