Automatic Backup

You can set a periodic backup policy to automatically back up the eSight database and configuration files to the backup path set in the backup policy. This allows you to manually restore eSight using the backup data if an error occurs on eSight.


Data backup can be performed only for online servers.


  1. Log in to the maintenance tool and choose Backup and Restoration > Backup Policy Setting from the main menu.
  2. Select Enable periodic backup, and set Backup start time and Backup period.

    You are advised to set the unit of Backup period to Days. If the unit is set to Months, the value of Start time cannot be 29, 30, or 31 of a month.

    To avoid exceptions during database backup, the scheduled backup time must be different from the alarm dump time. You are advised to back up the database in off-peak hours.

  3. (Optional) Click on the left of Customize Backup Directory to set a user-defined backup folder.

    In the list of user-defined backup folders, click in the Operation column. In the Modify Custom Backup Directory dialog box, add desired folders and click OK.

    • This step is optional.

      If a backup folder is not configured, the system backs up only default files (to the path that will be set in next step) according to system configuration.

      If a backup folder is configured, the system backs up the files in the folder and the default files that require backup.

    • The backup folder must be an existing one in the product directory, for example, a folder in eSight installation directory/AppBase.
    • The directory path cannot exceed 255 characters, and a maximum of 255 directories are supported.
    • If the backup folders are the same, only one is saved. If a folder includes other folders, only the parent folder is saved.

  4. (Optional) Click on the left of Encryption settings and set the ciphertext password of the backup package.

    The backup package with a ciphertext password prevents data from leaking or being tampered with.

  5. Set the backup path and number of backup files.

    • Back up to local server
      1. Select Backup to local server.
      2. In the Local server backup path list, click in the Operation column and set the path for storing backup files in the Modify Backup Directory dialog box.
        • Changing the backup up frequently is not recommended. Otherwise, early backup packages may be lost.
        • It is advisable to create a directory as a backup directory to avoid the service impacts caused due to backup and restoration.
      3. Set Number of backup files.
      4. Click Apply.
      5. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog box.

        On the Backup Policy Setting page, if "Backup policy set successfully" is displayed in the lower part, the backup policy is set successfully.

    • Backing up data to a remote server
      1. Select Backup to remote server.
      2. Set Server IP Address, Connection type and port number, User name, Password, and Remote server backup path.
        • Connection type and port number: Four connection types are available: FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), FTPS (File Transfer Protocol over SSL), and SFTP + KEY. To ensure file transfer security, SFTP and FTPS are recommended.

          SFTP + KEY requires mutual key trust between the primary server and remote server. The following uses the SFTP service of the Linux operating system as an example to describe how to configure mutual trust through SFTP and KEY. For details, see Configuring SFTP+KEY Remote Backup.

          Configure key trust between the primary server and remote server as follows:
          1. The default private key name is id_ftp_rsa.

            Private key files are in OpenSSH format instead of the putty private key (PPK) format.

          2. Private keys are stored in the .ssh folder in the home directory of the maintenance tool startup user. If this folder does not exist, create it.

            For example, if the administrator user starts the maintenance tool on Windows and the home directory of the administrator user is C:\Users\Administrator, the private key is stored in C:\Users\Administrator\.ssh. If ossuser starts the maintenance tool on Linux and the home directory of ossuser is /ossuser, the private key is stored in /ossuser/.ssh.

          3. In an HA system, you need to place the same private key on the standby server.

          The default port number for the SFTP, FTP, and FTPS protocols are 22, 21, and 990, respectively. You must configure certificates for the client before using the FTPS protocol. For details, see How Do I Set the Connection Protocol for Remote Backup to FTPS.

        • User name: user name mapping to the connection protocol.
        • Remote server backup path: Relative path to the shared directory on the remote server.

          The default backup path of the remote server is the home directory of the user who connects to the remote server.

          For example, assume that the user for connecting to the remote server is ossuser and that the home directory of the user is C:/ossuser on Windows. If a user enters AAA, the files are saved in C:/ossuser/AAA. On the Linux, the directory is /ossuser. If a user enters AAA, the files are saved in /ossuser/AAA.

      3. (Optional) Click Verify Validate. The parameters are successfully set if Verification succeeded is displayed. If any parameter fails to be set, set the parameter again.
      4. Set Number of backup files.
      5. Click Apply.
      6. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog box.

        If "Backup policy saved successfully" is displayed, the backup policy is successfully configured.

Operation Result

You can use the function of querying historical records to view the execution status of automatic backup tasks.

Follow-up Procedure



Querying historical backup records

  1. Choose Backup and Restoration > Historical Records from the main menu.
  2. Select Backup from the drop-down list.
  3. Click Expand All to check the restored historical records.
    • Backup success

      You can view the backup data in the specified backup path. To prevent manual restoration from being affected, you are advised not to modify backup file names.

    • Backup failure

      If necessary, re-configure an automatic backup policy to back up data.

Restore the NMS using the backup data.
