Discovering Links

Links display physical or logical connections between topology objects.

Table 7-2 lists the link discovery modes supported by eSight.

Discovery Mode


Based on LLDP

Links are discovered through the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP). The LLDP protocol is a layer 2 link discovery protocol defined in IEEE 802.1ab. Through this protocol, you can get layer 2 information about all devices connected to the NMS. This helps to expand network management scale and grasp detailed network topology and change information. It also helps to discover improper configuration on the network and report the information to the network administrator.

You need to enable the LLDP function of devices.

Based on CDP

Links are discovered through the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP). This protocol is mainly used for link discovery between Cisco devices.

You need to enable the CDP function of devices.

Based on the MAC forwarding table

If a device does not support LLDP or CDP, you can obtain the MAC forwarding table of the device and perform matching calculation to discover links.

  • This discovery mode depends on the MAC forwarding table of the device. The physical MAC address of the link port must be included in the MAC forwarding table.
  • The MAC forwarding table has an aging mechanism. If the MAC address of a port on an access device that sends packets at a low frequency is aged, links cannot be discovered. In this case, links need to be manually created.
