Storage Performance Management

Storage Performance Management

Performance Configuration

Describes how to configure performance.

Context

To collect storage device performance data, enable the performance monitoring function first and configure time synchronization between eSight and the device.

Procedure

  • Enable the performance monitoring function of the storage device.

Go to the storage device management interface. A Huawei storage device is used as an example. The operation procedure is as follows:

    1. On the menu bar, choose Resource > Storage Subnet.

    2. In the navigation tree, choose Storage > Storage Device.
    3. In the function pane, click the device name.
    4. Enable the performance monitoring function, ensure that performance files of the storage device can be generated properly. For details, see the OceanStor DeviceManager Online Help.

You can perform the following operations to enable the performance monitoring function for 5800 V3:

      1. On OceanStor DeviceManager, choose Settings > Performance Monitoring Settings.
      2. On the Performance Monitoring Settings page, select Parameter Settings.
      3. Select Save monitoring data on the device and set the performance monitoring status to Enabled.

  • Configure storage device time.
    1. Change the storage device time to make it consistent with the eSight server time. For details, see the OceanStor DeviceManager Online Help.

You can perform the following operations to change the time of 5800 V3:

      1. On OceanStor DeviceManager, choose Settings > Basic Information.
      2. On the Basic Information page, select Device Time.
      3. Select Manual and click Modify.
      4. Set the system time to make it consistent with the eSight time.

Configuring Real-time Performance Data Playback

After this operation is complete, the real-time device performance data displayed on the performance data page includes the historical performance data of the last hour.

Context

To set the performance replay period for a device, you can select the device on the storage device page and click Set Performance Monitoring, as shown in Managing All Storage Devices.

Procedure

  1. Choose Resource > Storage Subnet from the main menu.

  2. Choose Configuration > Real-time Performance Playback from the navigation tree.
  3. Select devices to be configured on the left and click to add the devices to the area on the right.

    NOTE:
    • Devices of OceanStor V300R003C00, OceanStor V500R007C00, and later versions are supported. A maximum of 20 devices can be configured.
    • Devices of OceanStor 18000 V300R006C20SPH015 and OceanStor 18000 V500R007C10SPH015 are supported.
    • Devices of OceanStor Dorado V300R001C00 and later versions are supported.
    • If you select All Devices, the real-time performance data playback function is enabled for all devices. This function is automatically enabled for new devices connected to eSight. If you want to enable the real-time performance data playback function for only some devices, you need to disable the function for all devices, select the corresponding devices, and click Save.
    • The left area displays all devices for which the real-time performance playback function can be configured. The right area displays devices for which the real-time performance playback function has been configured.
    • You can select devices on the right and click to delete them.

  4. Click Save.

    NOTE:

You can perform the following operations for verification.

    1. Choose Performance > Performance Data.
    2. Choose Huawei Storage(Enterprise Storage) > Controller.
    3. Select a device for which the real-time performance playback function has been configured and click Real-time Details. The historical performance data of the last hour is displayed.

Function Description

This section describes the performance statistics supported by the storage device.

Application Scope

The following performance indicators can be collected:

  • Device
  • Controller
  • Storage pool
  • Front-end host port
  • Back-end port
  • LUN
  • File system
  • Hard disk
  • Logical host
NOTE:
  • Devices of OceanStor V300R003C00, OceanStor V500R007C00, and later versions support file system performance playback.
  • Devices of OceanStor 18000 V300R006C20SPH015 and OceanStor 18000 V500R007C10SPH015 support file system performance playback.
  • Devices of OceanStor Dorado V300R001C00 and later versions support file system performance playback.

Collection Period Setting

Set the storage performance collection task according to the following table.

NOTE:

The performance data of a storage device depends on the performance data of the controller. If the performance data collection period of a device is changed, you need to change the performance collection task period of the controller to be the same as that of the device collection task.

Scenario

Number of Equivalent NEs

Collection Period

High configuration

CPU: 40-core, 2 GHz

Memory: 64 GB

Hard disk: 1 TB. The disk I/O speed must be greater than or equal to 100 Mbit/s. It is recommended that the disk I/O speed be greater than 180 Mbit/s.

Number of equivalent NEs ≥ 2000

30 minutes or higher

960 ≤ Number of equivalent NEs ≤ 2000

15 minutes

Number of equivalent NEs ≤ 960

5 minutes

Standard configuration

CPU: 12-core, 2 GHz

Memory: 32 GB

Hard disk: 500 GB. The disk I/O speed must be greater than or equal to 100 Mbit/s. It is recommended that the disk I/O speed be greater than 180 Mbit/s.

Number of equivalent NEs ≥ 1000

30 minutes or higher

480 ≤ Number of equivalent NEs ≤ 1000

15 minutes

Number of equivalent NEs ≤ 480

5 minutes

Collection Unit Quantity Setting

The number of collection units supported by eSight during performance collection is calculated as follows: Number of collection units = Number of resources x Number of performance indicators x (15 minutes/collection period). The resources include devices, boards, and interfaces. The performance indicators include the CPU usage and memory usage.

NOTE:

If the number of collection units exceeds the maximum, the pressure on eSight is huge and performance collection may time out.
