eSight supports automatic upgrades of firmware embedded in Huawei servers. The V300R010C00SPC500 version does not support this function. The V300R010C00SPC500 version having a patch version later than V300R010C00SPC500 installed also does not support this function.

Application Scenarios

Application Scenarios for Firmware Upgrade

The application scenarios for server firmware upgrade are described as follows:

  • Automatically obtaining a firmware upgrade package and upgrading the firmware

    When eSight detects that the firmware or driver version on the Huawei support website is inconsistent with that on a server, eSight automatically downloads the latest firmware or driver version. When an administrator creates and performs an upgrade task, eSight upgrades the firmware and driver based on the upgrade task.

  • Manually obtaining a firmware upgrade package and upgrading the firmware

    When an administrator downloads a firmware or driver package from the Huawei support website and finds that the package version is inconsistent with that checked on eSight, the administrator creates an upgrade task to upgrade the firmware and driver.

Time Required for Typical Firmware Upgrade Scenarios
  • Table 9-14 lists the time required for upgrading typical server firmware. Pay attention to the following points:
    • The firmware upgrade time is estimated in the situation that the network environment and server are in good state. The estimated time is for reference only.
    • The firmware upgrade time is estimated in the situation that the upgrade takes effect after automatic restart. The server restart time is contained.
    • For upgrade of the E9000 compute nodes, the HMM version must be 6.50 or later, and the iBMC version of all compute nodes in the chassis must be 2.50 or later. If the HMM and iBMC versions are earlier than these versions, the firmware upgrade time increases. The calculation method is as follows: Firmware upgrade time = Number of compute node models x 45 minutes
    • For details about other firmware upgrade restrictions, see Application Restrictions.

Function

Firmware upgrade management includes baseline management, upgrade task management, and report management.

Baseline Management

The upgrade package baseline management function of eSight enables administrators to customize a baseline package or configure eSight to automatically synchronize the baseline package from the Huawei support website. eSight automatically checks server firmware versions based on the versions defined in baseline packages and reports errors detected. In this way, administrators can obtain the latest updates of Huawei server firmware versions.

Upgrade Task Management

eSight supports task-based automatic firmware upgrade. Administrators can create firmware upgrade tasks as required.

Report Management

eSight allows administrators to view firmware upgrade statistics reports and firmware upgrade statistics summaries.

Principle

Server firmware upgrades support two networking modes: fully out-of-band and out-of-band. The working principles of server firmware upgrades vary depending on the networking mode.

Table 9-16 describes the networking modes.

  • Fully out-of-band

    Fully out-of-band upgrade is to upgrade firmware using the small operating system automatically mounted by eSight.

    In fully out-of-band networking mode, eSight automatically mounts a small operating system to the virtual drive of a device. When the device boots from the operating system, eSight sends iBMC instructions to the device for device configuration.

    NOTE:
    • The device IP address must be valid for the device to connect to eSight.
    • The user must have permission on the IPMI protocol for a device to connect to eSight.
    • The version of the iBMC must be 2.42 or later.
  • Out-of-band

    Out-of-band firmware upgrade is to upgrade firmware using the iBMC.

    In out-of-band networking mode, eSight sends iBMC instructions to devices for device configuration.

Application Restrictions

Restrictions When Southbound and Northbound Services Are Isolated

The network for isolating the southbound and northbound services is not applicable to the eSight multi-subnet scenario.

Southbound and northbound service isolation means that the southbound and northbound IP addresses of eSight are isolated. The northbound IP address is used to log in to the eSight UI, and the southbound IP address is used to communicate with servers.

  • Scenario where the southbound and northbound services are not isolated

    Multiple NICs on the eSight server can communicate with the servers.

    The out-of-band and fully out-of-band networking modes are supported.

  • Scenario where the southbound and northbound services are isolated

    Only one NIC on the eSight server can communicate with the servers.

    • The management plane IP address and the service plane IP address of the server are on the same plane.

      The out-of-band and fully out-of-band networking modes are supported.

    • The management plane IP address and the service plane IP address of the server are on different planes.

      Only the out-of-band and fully out-of-band networking modes are supported.

Application Restrictions on Firmware Upgrade

Table 9-19 lists the application restrictions on firmware upgrade.

Server

The firmware upgrade function applies only to rack servers, blade servers, high-density servers, and KunLun servers. For details about the supported server models and versions, see the Supported Server Specifications sheet of the eSight Supported Features.

Server service

  • The physical server where the eSight VM is located cannot be upgraded because the server will restart during the upgrade, interrupting the firmware upgrade task. If you need to upgrade the firmware of the physical server where the eSight VM is located, use the single-node management software.
  • When you upload or download a firmware upgrade package, the available space of the disk where eSight is installed must be equal to or larger than 40 GB.
  • If the blade, switch module, or HMM in the E9000 chassis is being upgraded, you cannot create a firmware upgrade task for the E9000 server again. Otherwise, the new firmware upgrade task will fail.
  • To upgrade the driver of a server, you must install the operating system and iBMA software on the server.
  • During the upgrade of the entire E9000 chassis, if the Fabric planes or Base planes of the switch modules are stacked and alarm information of the switch modules is not updated in time, update the E9000 server in the blade server list after the upgrade.
  • The KunLun 9008 V5 supports firmware upgrade only in a single physical partition. When the BIOS firmware is upgraded, only the BIOS upgrade of blade2 is supported.
  • The KunLun 9008 V5 does not support the LCD_APP firmware upgrade. Manually upgrade the firmware on the device if required.
  • eSight cannot display and upgrade firmware on extension subracks of KunLun servers.
  • Due to the DST transition, the firmware upgrade duration may be inaccurate. Calculate the upgrade duration based on the DST transition rule of the current year.
  • When upgrading the CPLD firmware in KunLun 9008 V5 dual-system mode, you need to upgrade the two servers at the same time. After the upgrade is complete, you need to manually power off and then power on the two servers for the firmware upgrade to take effect.
  • To upgrade the primary and backup iBMC image versions to the target version, you need to create two upgrade tasks to upgrade the primary and backup iBMC image versions respectively.
  • eSight can only upgrade the CPLD version of the hard disk mainboard of the rack, high-density, and blade servers. When making the upgrade package, select the package for upgrading the CPLD of the hard disk mainboard.

Switch module

  • Switch module firmware upgrade supports the upgrade of firmware on the Fabric, Base, and FC planes.
  • When the Fabric and Base planes of switch modules are stacked, use the fast upgrade mode to reduce the service interruption duration.
  • The Fabric and Base planes of the switch module support patch software upgrade and do not support upgrade of the same version.
  • If the Fabric planes of the switch modules are stacked, you can upgrade the Fabric plane of the active switch module, while that of the standby switch module can be automatically upgraded. You can also upgrade the Fabric planes of the active and standby switch modules together. If only the Fabric plane of the standby switch module is upgraded, the upgrade will fail.
  • The Fabric plane of the switch module CX710 cannot be rolled back from version 6.03 or a later version to a version earlier than 6.03.
  • The 2308 and 3008 RAID controller cards do not support version rollback.

Firmware version

  • During simultaneous upgrade of the driver and firmware on the server, the iBMC and BIOS firmware upgrade files occasionally fail to be uploaded to the server. You are advised to upgrade the iBMC version to 2.60 or later to reduce the upgrade failure rate.
  • During the firmware upgrade of a blade server, eSight displays a message indicating that the server failed to be restarted. However, the server has been successfully restarted. You are advised to upgrade the iBMC version to 2.90 or later to reduce the upgrade failure rate.
  • If the iBMC version of the XH321 V3 is upgraded to 2.90 or later, the iBMA can be properly displayed.

Firmware package

A maximum of 100 firmware upgrade packages with a total size of no more than 5 GB can be downloaded online each time. The total size of firmware upgrade packages uploaded each time cannot exceed 5 GB.
