Monitoring Network Resource Quality

Network resources include the devices and direct links between devices on the network. You can monitor network resource quality through iPCA management or topology management. In topology management mode, you can intuitively view the number of lost packets and packet loss rate on devices and links.

Monitoring Network Resource Quality (Topology Management)

Network resources include the devices and direct links between devices on the network. eSight monitors network resources so that the network administrator can understand the health status on the entire network and quickly locate faults in devices and links.

Description

1. Create a monitoring task.

To monitor network resource quality, you need to create a monitoring task and specify the devices and direct links to be monitored according to the networking and device types on the network.

2. Monitor quality using alarms and physical topology.

Maintenance personnel usually monitor network quality by checking alarms and topology. Alarms help you quickly learn about the health status of network resources and topology allows you to view details about network resources.

Creating a Monitoring Task
  • Network Time Protocol (NTP) has been configured to synchronize clock between devices. NTP ensures accuracy of iPCA quality measurement.
  • Only Huawei agile devices support iPCA. Agile devices refer to the devices supporting agile features. Currently, Huawei agile devices include S12700, S7700, and S5720HI. For details, see eSight Specification List.
  1. Choose Topology > Topology Management from the main menu.

  2. Set the topology and link display method to display packet loss statistics on links.

    1. Right-click the blank area on the topology view and choose Topology Display Settings from the shortcut menu.
    2. Click Link Label, select Port Statistics, click Edit, select group, click Next, select iPCA packet loss(%), and click OK.

  3. Select the device or direct link where iPCA needs to be deployed, right-click it, and choose iPCA > Create iPCA Task from the shortcut menu.

    NOTE:
    • Press Ctrl+A to select all devices and direct links on an entire subnet.
    • Press Ctrl and click a device or direct link to select some devices or direct links.
    • Drag the mouse to select devices and direct links in a specified region.

  4. View the quality of the devices and direct links.

Monitoring Quality Using Alarms and Physical Topology

The monitoring process is as follows:

  1. View alarms that have been reported to know the health status of network resources.
  2. Perform the following operations according to the health status of network resources:
    • If there are reported alarms, check Location Info in the alarm list and Historical Data in the Operation column to find out the alarm cause.
    • If no alarm has been generated, view the physical topology to know details about network resources. This information helps you take preventive measures before a fault occurs.

  1. View alarms that have been reported to know the health status of network resources.

    Choose Fault > Current Alarms from the main menu.

  2. Perform the following operations according to the health status of network resources:

    • If there are reported alarms, check Location Info in the alarm list and Historical Data in the Operation column to find out the alarm cause and handle the alarms.
    • If no alarm has been generated, view the physical topology to know details (for example, device packet loss rate) about network resources. This information helps you take preventive measures before a fault occurs.
      1. Choose Topology > Topology Management from the main menu.

      2. Search for the devices or direct links. When the devices or links are found, the packet loss rates are displayed above the devices or links.
      3. To obtain detailed statistics, view the real-time or historical data of the devices or direct links.

        Right-click a device or direct link, and choose Query Real-time Data or Query Historical Data from the shortcut menu.

Network resources include the devices and direct links between devices on the network. eSight monitors network resources so that the network administrator can understand the health status on the entire network and quickly locate faults in devices and links.

Monitoring the Network Quality of a Device

  1. Choose Resource > Network > Business > iPCA Management from the main menu.

  2. Choose iPCA Management > Device-Level from the navigation tree on the left.
  3. Click Create and add a device to be detected. After the device is added successfully, the default status of the device is Start.
  4. Click buttons in the Operation column to view related data.

    Viewing historical data

    Click to view the historical packet loss rate and lost packet quantity of the device.

    Viewing real-time data

    Click to view the real-time packet loss rate and lost packet quantity of the device.

    Viewing alarms

    Click to go to Alarm List. If alarms exist, check the alarm causes and handle the alarms.

Monitoring the Network Quality of a Link

  1. Choose Resource > Network > Equipment > Link Management from the main menu.

  2. Click Create Link and create a link whose quality is to be monitored.
  3. Choose Resource > Network > Business > iPCA Management from the main menu.

  4. Choose iPCA Management > Link-Level from the navigation tree on the left.
  5. Click Create and add the created link. After the link is added successfully, the default status of the link is Start.
  6. Click buttons in the Operation column to view related data.

    Viewing historical data

    Click to view the historical packet loss rate and lost packet quantity of the link.

    Viewing real-time data

    Click to view the real-time packet loss rate and lost packet quantity of the link.

    Viewing alarms of the source port

    Click to go to Alarm List. If alarms exist, check the alarm causes and handle the alarms.

    Viewing alarms of the destination port

    Click to go to Alarm List. If alarms exist, check the alarm causes and handle the alarms.
