Device Software Management Introduction

Device Software Management Introduction

This section describes the definition, functions, application restrictions, and key indicators of device software management.

Definition

Through device software management of eSight, you can upgrade the device software version, install the software patch, upgrade the signature database, and upload certificate files of AC devices.

Functions

Device software management is a function module provided by eSight for upgrading software versions, patches, and signature databases of devices and uploading certificate files of ACs. In the current version, the AC can be used to upgrade the software version of fit APs. In addition, batch software upgrade and file management are supported for SVF AS devices, switches (including data center switches and campus switches), ARs (including AR531 IoT devices), ACs, firewalls, and fat APs. The module provides three sub-functions: version task management, signature database task management, and file management. The version task management function manages tasks for upgrading device software versions and patches and tasks for uploading certificate files of ACs. The signature database task management function manages device signature database upgrade tasks. You can view the upgrade status of each device in the task details. The file management function manages software versions, patch files, license files, signature database files, and certificate files of devices based on the device type.

Version Task Management

Manages all version upgrade tasks and refreshes the upgrade status in real time.

  • The task uniformly manages the version and patch upgrade of a type of devices and uploads the certificate files of AC devices.
  • The status of upgrade tasks is refreshed in real time. You can re-execute failed tasks.
  • The wizard-based upgrade allows you to create upgrade tasks following a wizard.
  • You can create upgrade tasks in three steps and check task summary information.
  • You can continue to create upgrade tasks or go to the task management page to check task execution information.
Signature Database Task Management

Manages all signature database upgrade tasks and refreshes the upgrade status in real time,

Signature Database Global Management

eSight uniformly displays signature database versions of devices and status of scheduled upgrade tasks.

File Management

eSight manages software versions, patch files, license files, signature database files, and certificate files of devices.

Storage Settings

You can set the upper limit of the disk space occupied by all the files managed by the device software management module.

Application Restrictions

  • Version upgrade management
    • When adding a device to eSight, correctly configure SNMP and Telnet/STelnet parameters to ensure the FTP/SFTP connectivity. By default, files are transferred through SFTP. To transfer files through FTP, ensure that the corresponding service has been enabled. For details about how to enable the service, see Maintenance Guide > Common Operations and Configuration > Configuring the eSight File Transfer Protocols.
    • During the device software upgrade, the device may restart. You need to choose a proper time to avoid affecting the normal network service.
    • Obtain the formal target version file from Huawei Support website. Verify that the file is correct. Do not change the file name so that the upgrade can be normally performed. For detailed upgrade precautions, see the device documents.
    • Ensure that the devices to be upgraded have sufficient storage space to load the upgrade files. If the storage space is insufficient, follow instructions in the product documentation of the corresponding device to release the storage space.
    • eSight regards patches whose names contain SPC/CP as cold patches. Devices will be restarted during the upgrade.
    • Before installing a patch, ensure that the patch matches the device software version. If they do not match, the upgrade will fail.
    • If configuration files need to be converted after the device is upgraded to the target version, eSight cannot be upgraded to the target version.
    • When the CE device adopts In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU), take the precautions on the device networking, feature limitations, and version support to ensure that the ISSU upgrade check is passed. Obtain the target version by referring to the upgrade guide.
    • The SVF AS and FitAP devices do not support restart policy selection. They will automatically restart during the upgrade.
    • To upgrade FatAP V200R009C00SPC200 and later versions using the FTP mode, you need to set oms.ftpServer.ftps.isResetOffset in the AppBase/sysagent/etc/sysconf/svcbase/med_node_1_svc.xml file to false and restart eSight.
    • The upgrade task cannot be stopped after being delivered.
  • Signature Database Upgrade Management
    • The upgrade of the signature database occupies network resources. You need to choose a proper time to avoid affecting the normal network service.
    • The signature databases of the AC, AR, and firewall devices can be upgraded. For details about the supported device models and versions, see the Specification List.
    • Before upgrading a signature database, add a device to eSight and correctly configure the SNMP and STelnet/Telnet parameters.
  • License Management
    • The license management for firewall devices is supported. For details about the supported device models and versions, see the Specification List.
    • Before license management, add a device to eSight and correctly configure the SNMP and NetConf parameters.
