Service Characteristics

The technology behind Oracle Database's OLAP service uses multidimensional structures to provide rapid access to data for analysis. OLAP is a type of application that allows users to execute complex statistics queries in a database for an extended time.

The load characteristics of an OLAP application are as follows:

  • From the perspective of database administrators
    • No data or only a small amount of data is modified.
    • The data query process is complex.
    • The data use frequency is gradually reduced.
    • The query output is usually in the form of a statistical value.
  • From the perspective of storage sampling
    • Every I/O is large-sized, typically ranging from 64 KB to 1 MB.
    • Data is read in sequence.
    • When read operations are being performed, write operations are performed in a temporary tablespace.
    • Online logs are seldom written unless data is loaded in batches.
