Specifying Thresholds

Specifying Thresholds

This section describes how to specify alarm generation and clearance thresholds for the performance indicators related to objects (such as controllers and front-end ports) of a registered device. If an indicator value is above (or below) the alarm threshold, SystemReporter sends an alarm to ask you to check and handle the device fault. If the indicator value is higher (or lower) than the clearance threshold, SystemReporter clears the alarm and includes it in the historical alarm list.

  1. Go to the Threshold dialog box.

    1. On the top navigation bar of the SystemReporter user interface, click System.
    2. In the left navigation tree, choose System Configuration > Registration and Configuration.
    3. From the list of registered devices in the right function pane, select a device for which you want to configure thresholds.
    4. Click Threshold.

The Threshold dialog box is displayed.

  2. Specify thresholds for an object type.

To specify thresholds for an object type, perform the following steps. For example, specify alarm thresholds for controllers.

    1. Set Type to Controller.
    2. Click Threshold Switch to enable the threshold switch of an indicator.
    3. Specify thresholds for each indicator. Table 3-5 describes the parameters.
      Table 3-5 Threshold parameters

      Indicator Name

      Name of the indicator.

      Avg. I/O response time (ms)

      Object Type

      Type of the object.

      Threshold Type

Threshold type of the indicator. If the indicator value is higher or lower than the threshold, SystemReporter generates an alarm. Possible values are Greater-than and Smaller-than.

      Alarm Threshold

Threshold value of an object indicator. When this value is reached, SystemReporter generates an alarm.

      Clearing Threshold

When the threshold is reached, the generated alarm is cleared and added to the historical alarm list.

      Triggering Condition

Number of times the indicator value reaches the alarm threshold. When the number of times is reached, SystemReporter generates a threshold alarm.

Severity that triggers an alarm. Possible values are Critical, Major, and Warning.

      Threshold Switch

Determines whether to generate threshold alarms.

    4. Click OK.

The Information dialog box is displayed, indicating that the thresholds are configured successfully.

    5. Click OK.

  3. Optional: Specify thresholds for a specific object.

If you want to specify thresholds for a specific object, perform the following steps. For example, specify alarm thresholds for controller CTE0.A.

    1. Click Exception Threshold.

The Exception Threshold dialog box is displayed.

    2. Click Add.

The Add Exception Threshold dialog box is displayed.

Set Type to Controller. Under Available, select CTE0.A. In the Details area, set thresholds for specific indicators. For details about the parameters, see Table 3-5.

    3. Click OK.

The Information dialog box is displayed, indicating that exception thresholds are added successfully.

    4. Perform the subsequent operations as prompted.

Follow-up Procedure

You can view alarms related to performance indicators on the Alarms page of SystemReporter if thresholds are specified and alarm generation conditions are met. You can also use DeviceManager to view such alarm information. For details about how to use DeviceManager to view alarm information, see Checking Alarm Information of a Storage System.
