SmartMigration Feature Guide

This document is applicable to OceanStor Dorado3000 V3, Dorado5000 V3, Dorado6000 V3 and Dorado18000 V3. This document describes the implementation principles and application scenarios of the SmartMigration feature. Also, it explains how to configure and manage SmartMigration.

This section describes the background, definition, and benefits of SmartMigration.


With the development of storage technologies and digitalization in various industries, legacy storage systems need to be replaced, storage resources need to be reallocated, and service performance needs to be adjusted. This has placed huge emphasis on the need for service data migration within a storage system and between storage systems. In some critical areas, host service interruption may cause data loss and huge economic impacts. Non-disruptive service data migration becomes a top issue for users. SmartMigration is developed to address those requirements. It migrates service data in a storage system without interrupting host services and enables service data to be migrated between Huawei storage systems and other compatible storage systems.


SmartMigration is a key technology for service migration. It can non-disruptively migrate service data within a storage system and between storage systems.


Table 1-1 describes the benefits of SmartMigration.

Reliable service continuity

Service data is migrated non-disruptively, preventing any loss caused by service interruption during service migration.

Stable data consistency

During service data migration, data changes made by hosts will be sent to both the source LUN and target LUN, ensuring data consistency after migration and preventing data loss.

Convenient performance adjustability

To flexibly adjust service performance levels, SmartMigration migrates service data between different storage media and RAID levels based on service requirements.

Data migration between heterogeneous storage systems

In addition to service data migration within a storage system, SmartMigration also supports service data migration between a Huawei storage system and a compatible heterogeneous storage system.
