Replacing a Front Disk Backplane of a 5288 V5 36-Slot Node or TaiShan 5280 36-Slot Node

A disk backplane provides power and data transmission channels for disks.

Impact on the System

Before replacing a disk backplane on a storage node, you must power off the node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node.

Prerequisites

  • A spare disk backplane is ready.

Precautions

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels

Replacement Process

Replace a disk backplane by following the process shown in Figure 5-16.

Procedure

  1. Remove the storage node from its cabinet and remove the chassis cover. For details, see Basic Operations.
  2. Remove the disk module.

    Correctly record the slots where disk modules reside. Install disk modules into the same slots before and after the replacement. Otherwise, services may be affected.

    1. Press the button that secures the disk module ejector lever, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-17.

      The ejector lever automatically ejects.

    2. Hold the ejector lever, and pull out the disk module for approximately 3 cm, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-17.
    3. Wait at least 30 seconds until the disk stops spinning, and slowly pull out the disk module, as shown in step 3 in Figure 5-17.

  3. Remove the air duct.

    Lift the air duct according to the signs on the air duct, as shown in the following figures.

  4. Remove the fan modules. For details, see Replacing a Fan Module.
  5. Remove the fan module bracket.

    Press and hold down the latches on both sides of the fan module bracket, and lift the fan module bracket, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in the following figures.

  6. Remove the front disk backplane.

    1. Remove all cables from the disk backplane.
    2. Unscrew and lift the backplane until it is stuck. Remove the backplane in the arrow direction, as shown in the following figures.

  7. Place the removed disk backplane in an ESD bag.
  8. Take the spare disk backplane out of its ESD bag.
  9. Install the front disk backplane.

    1. Hook the disk backplane, and push it in the arrow direction until the latches are locked and it does not move, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

    2. Screw the disk backplane, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.
    3. Connect the cables for the disk backplane.

  10. Install the fan module bracket.

    Put the fan module bracket into the chassis, as shown in the following figures.

  11. Install the fan modules. For details, see Replacing a Fan Module.
  12. Install the air duct.

    Align the positioning pins on the air duct with the fixing holes on the mainboard according to the instructions on the chassis, and vertically place the air duct downwards, as shown in the following figures.

  13. Install the disk module.

    Install disk modules into the same slots before and after the replacement. Otherwise, services may be affected.

    1. Raise the ejector lever and push the disk module in along the guide rails until it does not move, as shown in step 1 in Figure 5-30.

    2. Ensure that the ejector lever is fastened to the beam, and lower the ejector lever to completely insert the disk module into the slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 5-30.

  14. Install the chassis cover and put the storage node into the cabinet. For details, see Basic Operations.
  15. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Ensure that all cables are correctly connected and then power on the storage node. If the storage node is not powered on, press the power button on the front panel.
  16. Check whether the backplane is successfully replaced.

    • If the disks are powered on properly and the disk indicators are steady on, the backplane is successfully replaced.
    • If the disk indicators are off, the backplane fails to be replaced. Reinstall it or contact Huawei technical support engineers.

  17. Check the system status.

    On SmartKit, choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection and check the system status.
    • If all inspection items pass the inspection, the inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail, the inspection fails. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. Perform inspection again after fault rectification. If the inspection still fails, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

Label the replaced disk backplane to facilitate subsequent operations.
