Replacing a Mainboard of a 2288H V5 12-Slot Node or 5288 V5 36-Slot Node

This section describes how to replace a mainboard.

Impact on the System

Before replacing a mainboard on a storage node, you must power off the node. This will adversely affect the services running on the node.

Prerequisites

A spare mainboard is ready.

Precautions

Before replacing a mainboard, mark the connections of the cables.

Tools and Materials

  • Flat-head screwdrivers
  • Phillips screwdrivers
  • ESD wrist straps
  • ESD bags
  • Labels

Replacement Process

Replace a mainboard by following the process shown in Figure 21-1.

Procedure

  1. Remove the storage node from its cabinet and remove the chassis cover. For details, see Basic Operations.
  2. Remove power modules. For details, see Replacing a Power Module.
  3. Remove the air duct.

    Lift the air duct according to the signs on the air duct, as shown in the following figures.

  4. Remove the fan module.

    1. Press the latches on both sides of the fan module to unlock it, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

    2. Lift the fan module slowly, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.
    3. When the fan module is loose, remove it from the slot.

  5. Remove the fan module bracket.

    Press and hold down the latches on both sides of the fan module bracket, and lift the fan module bracket, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in the following figures.

  6. Remove the DIMM.

    1. At the same time, open the fixing clips of the DIMM slot, as shown in step 1 in Figure 21-8.

    2. Remove the DIMM from the slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 21-8.

  7. Remove CPUs. For details, see Replacing a CPU.
  8. Remove the RAID controller card.

    1. Press and hold down the latches on the RAID controller card cable connectors and pull out the cables.
    2. Unscrew the RAID controller card, as shown in step 1 in Figure 21-9.

    3. Slowly lift the RAID controller card upwards away from the connector on the mainboard, as shown in step 2 in Figure 21-9.

  9. Remove the riser card.

    Loosen the screw on the riser card and lift the riser card, as shown in the following figures.

  10. Remove the 2 x 3.5-inch rear disk assembly.

    1. Remove all cables from the rear disk assembly.
    2. Unscrew the rear disk assembly and vertically lift it, as shown in the following figures.

  11. Remove the 4 x 2.5-inch rear disk assembly.

    1. Remove all cables from the rear disk assembly.
    2. Unscrew the rear disk assembly, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

    3. Take out the rear disk assembly, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.

  12. Remove the cable guide.

    Open the latch in arrow direction (1), and remove the cable guide in arrow direction (2), as shown in the following figures.

  13. Remove the mainboard.

    1. Remove all cables from the mainboard.

      You must remove all cables from the mainboard. The cables include those connected to the disk backplane and the left and right mounting ear plates.

    2. Loosen the screws on the mainboard using a Phillips screwdriver, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

    3. Push the mainboard in the arrow direction as far as it will go by holding its handle in the red circle, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.

      Do not hold any other protruding part of the mainboard to lift it. Otherwise, the parts on the mainboard may be damaged.

    4. Raise the mainboard 10° to 15° in the arrow direction by holding the mainboard handle, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

    5. Lift the mainboard, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.
    6. Place the removed mainboard in an ESD bag.

  14. Install the mainboard.

    1. Take the spare mainboard out of its ESD bag.
    2. Hold the mainboard handle in the red circle, raise the mainboard by 10° to 15° in the arrow direction, and place it in the chassis, as shown in the following figures.

    3. Push the mainboard in the arrow direction as far as it will go, as shown in step 1 in the following figures.

      NOTE:

      To burn the original ESN into the new mainboard after replacement, contact Huawei technical support.

    4. Tighten the screws on the mainboard using the Phillips screwdriver, as shown in step 2 in the preceding figures.
    5. Connect all cables to the mainboard.

  15. Install the cable guide.

    Place the cable guide in the chassis, and push the cable guide in the arrow direction as far as it will go, as shown in the following figure.

  16. Install the 4 x 2.5-inch rear disk assembly.

    1. Install the rear disk assembly in the chassis and tighten the screws, as shown in steps 1 and 2 in the following figures.

    2. Connect the cables for the rear disk assembly.

  17. Install the 2 x 3.5-inch rear disk assembly.

    1. Install the rear disk assembly in the chassis and screw the assembly, as shown in the following figures.

    2. Connect the cables for the rear disk assembly.

  18. Install the riser card.

    Install the riser card and tighten the screw, as shown in the following figures.

  19. Install the RAID controller card.

    1. Remove any rubber plugs from the ports on the RAID controller card, as shown in Figure 21-38.

    2. Align the connectors on the RAID controller card with the ports on the mainboard, and insert the RAID controller card slowly into the mainboard, as shown in step 1 in Figure 21-39.

    3. Screw the RAID controller card, as shown in step 2 in Figure 21-39.
    4. Connect the cables for the RAID controller card.

  20. Install the CPUs. For details, see Replacing a CPU.
  21. Install the DIMM.

    1. Open the two fixing clips on the DIMM slot simultaneously, as shown in Figure 21-40.

    2. Align the DIMM with the DIMM slot, and insert the DIMM into the slot, as shown in Figure 21-41.

      The two fixing clips close automatically.

  22. Install the fan module bracket.

    Put the fan module bracket into the chassis, as shown in the following figures.

  23. Install the fan module.

    Insert the fan module along the guide rails into the slot until you hear a click. Check that the fan cable connector is securely inserted into the mainboard connector, as shown in the following figures.

  24. Install the air duct.

    Align the positioning pins on the air duct with the fixing holes on the mainboard according to the instructions on the chassis, and vertically place the air duct downwards, as shown in the following figures.

  25. Install the power modules. For details, see Replacing a Power Module.
  26. Install the chassis cover and put the storage node into the cabinet. For details, see Basic Operations.
  27. Connect the storage node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Ensure that all cables are correctly connected and then power on the storage node. If the storage node is not powered on, press the power button on the front panel.
  28. Replacing the faulty mainboard also replaces the NIC integrated on it. You need to reconfigure the NIC on the new mainboard. For details about the configuration, see Configuring BMC IP Addresses and Configuring the Storage Node Network in the FusionStorage OBS Software Installation Guide.
  29. Check the system status.

    On SmartKit, choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > More > Inspection and check the system status.
    • If all inspection items pass the inspection, the inspection is successful.
    • If some inspection items fail, the inspection fails. Rectify the faults by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports. Perform inspection again after fault rectification. If the inspection still fails, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

Label the replaced mainboard to facilitate subsequent operations.
