SNMP Protocol

SNMP Protocol

SNMP Management allows you to view and set system information as well as receive alarms generated by the system.

Context

Only the super administrators and administrators can configure the SNMP protocol.

Procedure

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Settings > SNMP Management > SNMP Protocol.
  3. Configure the SNMP protocol.

Set basic information about the SNMP protocol. Table 4-19 describes the parameters.

    Table 4-19 SNMP protocol parameters

    Parameter

    Description

    Port

Indicates an SNMP port number. The default value is 161 and cannot be modified.

    Context Name

Indicates the name of a context engine. This parameter must be set to the context name specified on the network element or be left empty.

    SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c

If this option is enabled, the system uses SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c.

    NOTE:

The use of SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c causes security risks. Therefore, you are advised not to enable this option.

    Community

You can click Modify to change the read and write community strings.

    NOTE:

Community strings need to be set only when SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c is enabled.

    Read Community

Indicates the name of the community string that has read permissions.

    NOTE:

This parameter needs to be set only when you choose to change the community string.

    Confirm Read Community

Enter the read community string again to ensure that the two inputs are the same.

    Write Community

Indicates the name of the community string that has write permissions.

    NOTE:

This parameter needs to be set only when you choose to change the community string.

    Confirm Write Community

Enter the write community string again to ensure that the two inputs are the same.

  4. Manage USM users.

    • Add a USM user.
      1. Click Add.
      2. Add a USM user on the Add USM User page that is displayed on the right.
      3. Set USM user information. Table 4-20 describes related parameters.
        Table 4-20 USM user parameters

        Parameter

        Description

        Username

        Indicates an USM user name.

        NOTE:
        • A name must be unique.
        • A name can contain 4 to 32 characters.
        • A name must consist of letters, digits, underscores (_), and hyphens (-), and must start with a letter.

        User Permission

Indicates an SNMP user's permission. Possible values are Read and write and Read-only.

        User Authentication

Indicates whether to enable user authentication. Security risks arise if user authentication is disabled. You are advised to enable user authentication and select the SHA512 authentication algorithm.

        Authentication Algorithm

Indicates the algorithm used to authenticate an SNMP user. Possible values are MD5, SHA, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512.

        NOTE:

In the HCS private cloud scnario, when eSight is interconnected, the authentication algorithm can only be SHA.

        Authentication Password

Indicates the authentication password of an SNMP user. The parameter value must meet the following requirements:

        • Ranges from 8 to 16 characters.
        • Contains at least three of the following character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, and special characters.
        • Differentiates from the user name and its reverse.
        • Does not contain repeated identical strings.

You are advised to set a password with higher security based on the password complexity requirements.

        Confirm Authentication Password

Confirms the authentication password of an SNMP user.

        Data Encryption

Indicates whether to enable data encryption. The use of data encryption improves security. Therefore, you are advised to enable it.

        Encryption Algorithm

Indicates the encryption protocol used by an SNMP user. Possible values are DES, 3DES, AES128, AES192, and AES256.

        NOTE:

In the HCS private cloud scnario, when eSight is interconnected, the encryption algorithm can only be AES128.

        Data Encryption Password

Indicates the data encryption password used by an SNMP user. The parameter value must meet the following requirements:

        • Ranges from 8 to 16 characters.
        • Contains at least three of the following character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, and special characters.
        • Differentiates from the user name and its reverse.
        • Differentiates from the authentication password.
        • Does not contain repeated identical strings.

You are advised to set a password with higher security based on the password complexity requirements.

        Confirm Data Encryption Password

Confirms the data encryption password used by an SNMP user.

      4. Click OK.
    • Delete a USM user.
      1. Select the user that you want to delete and click Delete.
      2. Confirm your operation as prompted.
    • Modify a USM user's information.
      1. Select the user information that you want to modify and click Modify.
      2. Modify information on the Modify USM User page that is displayed on the right. For details about the parameters, see Table 4-20.
