Checking the Equipment Room Environment

This section introduces standards of checking an equipment room. Checking the equipment room helps the maintenance personnel know the equipment room environment and adjust the environment in a timely manner to ensure that devices work in a good environment, and no device fault occurs due to environment problems.

Recommended Tools and Materials

You need to prepare the tools and materials for checking the equipment room environment, such as thermometer, hygrometer, electroprobe, and multimeter.

Reference Standards

Storage devices require a reliable operating environment. Usually, they are installed in a dedicated equipment room with a dedicated air-conditioning system and redundant power system. Table 3-5 lists maintenance items.

Observe the thermometer in the equipment room.

  • The temperature ranges from 5°C to 35°C.
  • If the temperature fails to meet the standard for a long time, repair or replace the air-conditioning system.

Operating humidity

Observe the hygrometer in the equipment room.

  • The relative humidity ranges from 20%RH to 80%RH.
  • If the relative humidity is higher than 80%RH, install a dehumidifier. If the relative humidity is lower than 20%RH, install a humidifier.

Particle contaminants

Ask a professional organization to monitor particle contaminants in the equipment room.

Corrosive airborne contaminants

Ask the professional organization to monitor corrosive airborne contaminants in the equipment room.

  • The corrosion rate of the copper test wafer is lower than 300 Åb/month based on ANSI/ISA-71.04 severity level G1.
  • The corrosion rate of the silver test wafer is lower than 200 Å/month based on G1 of ANSI/ISA-71.04.
  • The following is an example of initial evaluation for environmental corrosion risks.
    • Check whether the equipment room is near any sulfurous gas emission sources, for example, porcelain factories, rubber plants, tire factories, chemical factories, sewage plants, power stations, paper mills, smelters, automobile factories, coal mines, electroplating factories, food factories, and tanneries. If yes, environmental corrosion risks may exist.
    • Check whether the equipment room is near the sea, saline lakes, sewer outlets, sewage treatment tanks, and industrial/heating boilers. If yes, environmental corrosion risks may exist.
    • Check whether the equipment room was decorated in the latest six months. If yes, environmental corrosion risks may exist.
    • Check whether batteries are stocked in the equipment room. Check whether the storage battery leaks. If yes, environmental corrosion risks may exist.
    • Check whether the equipment room is closed tightly. Check whether the room windows and doors are always closed. If no, environmental corrosion risks may exist.

Firefighting facilities

Check firefighting facilities, power distribution units (PDUs), cabinets, enclosures, cable troughs, and other critical devices in the equipment room.

All parts are free of fire hazards. All firefighting facilities in the equipment room are functional and in good conditions.

Dust proof

Check the exterior and interior of the cabinet, floor, and surface of workbench in the equipment room.

All parts are clean and tidy.

Power supplies of cabinets

Check the running indicator of the PDU on each cabinet.

The running indicator (green) of the cabinet PDU must be on.

Exception Handling

  • If the temperature or humidity in the equipment room fails to meet standards, adjust the temperature or humidity of the air-conditioning system.
  • If the power supply in the equipment room fails to meet standards, deploy two dedicated power supply cables and a transformer with sufficient capacity.
