Commissioning BFD

BFD sessions can quickly detect link faults on a network. This section describes how to commission BFD.

Prerequisites

The following configurations are complete and the device is running normally:

Context

On the network shown in Figure 6-12, BFD is configured on the network.

Procedure

  1. Run the display current-configuration command on the commissioning device to check BFD parameters have taken effect.

    If a single-hop BFD session is set up, process-pst can be configured. The command output in bold shows that process-pst has been configured.

  2. Run the display bfd session command on the commissioning device to view BFD session information.

    The command output in bold shows BFD session information. Check that the number of BFD sessions is correct, the BFD session status is Up, and Local and Remote are correct.

    The command output in bold shows that after single-hop BFD is enabled, a single-hop BFD session is set up in the Up state. If multi-hop BFD is enabled, the command output will show that a multi-hop BFD session is set up in the Up state. If the BFD is associated with interface status successfully, the Process PST field will be displayed as Enable.

Troubleshooting

If the BFD session cannot become Up, complete the following:

  1. Run the display current-configuration configuration bfd-session command to check that the local discriminator of one end is the same as the remote discriminator of the other end.

    • If the local discriminator of one end is the same as the remote discriminator of the other end, go to Step 2.

    • If the local discriminator of one end is different from the remote discriminator of the other end, run the discriminator command to configure the local and remote discriminators for the BFD session and commit the configuration, and then run the display bfd session all command to check whether the BFD session is Up.
      • If the State field is Up, the BFD session has been created. In this case, go to Step 6.

      • If the State field is not Up, go to Step 2.

  2. Run the display bfd statistics session all command several times to check statistics about the BFD packets of the BFD session.
    1. If the value of the Down Count field increases, it indicates that the BFD session flaps. Then, go to Step 4.

    2. If the value of the Received Packets field does not increase, then check whether the value of the Received Bad Packets field increases.

      • If the value of this field increases, it indicates that the BFD packets have been received and discarded. Then, go to Step 5.

      • If the value of this field does not increase, it indicates that the BFD packets have not been received. Then, go to Step 3.

    3. If the value of the Sent Packets field does not increase, then check whether the value of the Sent Failed Packets field increases.

      • If the value of this field increases, it indicates that the BFD packets sent by the BFD session have been discarded. Then, go to Step 5.

      • If the value of this field does not increase, it indicates that the BFD packets failed to be sent. Then, go to Step 3.

  3. Run the ping command on one end to ping the other end of the BFD session.

    • If the ping fails, it indicates that the link fails. Rectify the fault on the link and then go to Step 6.

    • If the ping is successful, it indicates that the link is reachable. Then, go to Step 4.

  4. Run the display current-configuration configuration bfd-session command to view the min-tx-interval and min-rx-interval fields to check that the BFD detection period is longer than the delay on the link.

    • If the BFD detection period is shorter than the delay on the link, run the detect-multiplier, min-rx-interval, and min-tx-interval commands in the BFD session view to adjust the values to make the BFD detection timer longer than the delay on the link. Then, go to Step 6.

    • If the BFD detection time is longer than the delay time on the link, go to Step 5.

  5. If the fault persists, collect the following information and contact Huawei technical support personnel.

    • Results of the preceding troubleshooting procedure.
    • Configuration files, log files, and alarm files of the devices.
