(Optional) Configuring IGMP Snooping Proxy-Enabled Devices to Transparently Transmit Protocol Packets

To prevent an IGMP Snooping Proxy-enabled device and its upstream device from learning multicast forwarding entries from each other, configure them to transparently transmit protocol packets.

Context

If IGMP Snooping Proxy is enabled on a Layer 2 device and its upstream device, these devices will learn the same multicast entries. As a result, the upstream device will continuously send Query messages to which the downstream device responds, causing multicast entries not to age. Consequently, multicast protocol and data packets are forwarded unnecessarily, wasting bandwidth.

To solve this problem, configure these devices to transparently transmit protocol packets. After this function is enabled, these devices can transparently transmit IGMP messages received from a router port to other router ports, instead of learning the multicast entries created based on these IGMP messages. This function ensures a proper aging of multicast entries.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Perform either of the following operations to select VLAN or VPLS networking:

    • Run the vlan vlan-id command to enter the VLAN view.
    • Run the vsi vsi-name [ static ] command to enter the VSI view.

  3. Run igmp-snooping proxy router-protocol-pass

    IGMP Snooping Proxy-enabled devices in the VLAN or VSI are configured to transparently transmit protocol packets.

    By default, IGMP Snooping Proxy-enabled devices in the VLAN or VSI do not transparently transmit protocol packets.

  4. (Optional) Run igmp-snooping proxy-uplink-port

    An interface is configured as an IGMP snooping proxy uplink interface, so that no IGMP Query message can be sent to this interface.

  5. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.
