OSPFv3 Overview
OSPFv3 uses the same basic implementation mechanism as OSPFv2 but is incompatible with OSPFv2.
Definition
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is a link-state Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP).
At present, OSPF Version 2 (OSPFv2) is used for IPv4, whereas OSPF Version 3 (OSPFv3), developed on the basis of OSPFv2, is used for IPv6.
Purpose
The primary purpose of OSPFv3 is to develop a routing protocol independent of any specific network layer. The internal OSPFv3 router information is redesigned to achieve this purpose.
