VPN over Inter-chassis Hot Backup

VPN over Inter-chassis Hot Backup

In user access to a private VPN scenario, public and private IP addresses are translated through the ingress of the private VPN. The master device backs up the NAT/DS-Lite/NAT64 data carrying VPN information to the slave device through the backup link. In this way, the master and slave devices share the same private VPN. This is the VPN over NAT/DS-Lite/NAT64 inter-chassis hot backup scenario.

On the forwarding plane, each VPN information corresponds to a VPN index. In inter-chassis hot backup scenarios, the VPN indexes generated based on the VPN information may vary between the master and slave devices. The backup data and packets reach the peer device through RBS and can be properly processed only when valid VPN information is contained. Therefore, the master and slave devices can learn VPN information from each other.

As shown in Figure 11-9, when the master and slave devices learn the peer VPN index of the same private VPN instance, the master device (NAT device 1) backs up the VPN-A information with the VPN index of 100 in NAT session information to the slave device (NAT device 2). Therefore, when the private network traffic is switched from the master device to the slave device, packets can be correctly forwarded according to the NAT/DS-Lite/NAT64 forwarding entries backed up from the master device to the slave device.
