As shown in Figure 2-10, two routing devices are connected through an Eth-Trunk link, and the two member interfaces of the Eth-Trunk interface are located on different interfaces. That is, an inter-board Eth-Trunk interface is used.

Normally, after a BFD session is bound to an Eth-Trunk interface, only one BFD session is created. BFD selects the interface board on which a member interface resides as the board of the state machine and monitors the member link.

When the interface board where the BFD session resides is different from the interface board selected for the current service traffic, if the member interface of the BFD session, the member link, or the board of the state machine is faulty, the BFD module considers that the Eth-Trunk interface is faulty. Actually, the path used for transmitting service traffic is still functioning properly. Then, a BFD detection error occurs.

This problem can be solved by creating a BFD session group. See Figure 2-11.

  • Create a BFD session group for an inter-board Eth-Trunk link. The BFD session group contains two BFD sub-sessions. The service components detect only the status of the BFD session group.
  • The status of a BFD session group depends on the status of the two BFD sub-sessions.
  • As long as one BFD sub-session is Up, the BFD session group is Up. After the two sub-sessions go Down, the BFD session group goes Down.
