A chassis failure causes both the control and data planes to fail. In this case, protection switching is performed.

Backup Chassis Power-Off



  • Control plane

    After the backup chassis is powered off, the control plane of the virtual cluster is not affected.

  • Forwarding plane

    The local forwarding traffic on the master chassis is not affected, and bypass traffic between chassis is interrupted. Traffic localization needs to be configured to reduce inter-chassis bypass traffic.

    For local forwarding traffic on the backup chassis, the system runs an inter-chassis protocol on the control plane to detect the fault and sets boards on the backup chassis to unavailable. The system runs a protocol to converge and switches local forwarding traffic from the backup chassis to the master chassis, protecting the traffic.

Master Chassis Power-Off



  • Control plane

    The backup chassis runs the inter-chassis protocol on the control plane to detect the fault and becomes the master.

    NOTE:
    The virtual cluster cannot detect dual masters. Therefore, prevent the scenarios, except for whole chassis power-off, when all control links fail. If all links fail, the backup chassis incorrectly becomes the master, resulting in coexistence of two chassis.
  • Forwarding plane

    After protection switching is complete on the control plane, boards on the original master chassis are set to unavailable. The original backup chassis runs a protocol to converge and takes over the local forwarding traffic from the original master chassis, protecting traffic.

    The local forwarding traffic on the original backup chassis is not affected, but inter-chassis bypass traffic is interrupted. Traffic localization needs to be configured to reduce inter-chassis bypass traffic.
