Control Link Failure

In the following example, a cluster consists of two chassis.

In the control plane topology, four links connect the CPUs of two MPUs. The control plane is reachable if any link is connected. If a control link fails, the rapid protection mechanism within the control plane takes effect and switches traffic to the other control links. This process does not involve the process of the inter-chassis protocol's detecting the fault or topology convergence.

The cluster does not support the scenario when all control links fail.

MPU Failures

  • The cold-backup MPU fails.

    The cold-backup MPU failure does not affect services. This fault causes the control links between two chassis to fail. The protection mechanism is the same as the previous one for the control link failure.

  • The master MPU fails.

    If the master MPU fails, the backup MPU becomes the master within a short period of time. The connectivity of the control plane is then restored.

  • The slave MPU fails.

    If the slave MPU fails, the master MPU reselects a slave MPU, which does not affect services.
