Assembling an Ethernet Cable with an Unshielded RJ45 Connector

Assembling an Ethernet Cable with an Unshielded RJ45 Connector

This section describes how to assemble a straight-through cable with an unshielded RJ45 connector. Assembling other types of Ethernet cables is similar.

Context

Figure 4-28 shows the components of an unshielded RJ45 connector and a straight-through cable.

A. Connector plug

B. Connector jacket

C. Twisted pair

Procedure

  1. Remove a 30-mm (1.18 in.) long section of the jacket, as shown in Figure 4-29.

When you remove the shield layer, do not damage the insulation layer of the twisted pair cable.

  2. Route the four twisted pairs and cut off any surplus cable along the edge of the connector plug. Figure 4-30 shows and Table 4-6 lists the mapping between core wire colors and pins.

  3. Feed the cable into the plug and crimp the connector, as shown in Figure 4-31.

    NOTE:

Ensure that the cable is in good contact with the plug.
