Installing Fiber Spools and Optical Modules

NOTE:
  • Fiber spools are optional.
  • The number of fiber spools to be installed depends on the actual requirements. To facilitate fiber management and routing, do not install two fiber management spools on the same side of a cabinet.
  • If cabinets need to be combined, fiber spools must be installed on a side of each cabinet before cabinets are combined.
  • Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves before installing optical modules.
  • Install dust-proof caps on optical ports without optical modules.
  1. Install a fiber spool, as shown in 1 in Figure 12-22.
  2. Install optical modules, as shown in 2 in Figure 12-22.

Installing Optical Fibers

  • The clearance between the power cable, ground cable, and signal cable must be larger than 30 mm (1.18 in.) each. The bending radius of an optical fiber must be greater than 40 mm (1.57 in.).
  • Dust caps must be installed on optical modules that are not connected to any optical fibers.
  • Do not bundle optical fibers too tightly. You must be able to conveniently remove a single fiber from the bundle.

To install optical fibers, perform the following steps:

  1. Attach temporary labels to both ends of each optical fiber.
  2. Bind the optical fibers and then insert each bundle in a corrugated pipe.
  3. To mask and reinforce the edges of the pipe, wrap electrical tape around both ends, as shown in 1 in Figure 12-23.
  4. Route the corrugated pipe along the cable tray.
  5. Lead the corrugated pipe about 100 mm (3.94 in.) into the cabinet through the cable opening in the top. Secure the corrugated pipe to the cabinet using cable ties, as shown in 2 in Figure 12-23.

  6. Route the optical fibers along the cabling area. Remove dust caps from optical modules and protective covers from optical fibers. Connect the optical fibers to the corresponding optical modules. See 1 in Figure 12-24.
  7. Connect the other end of each optical fiber to an Optical Distribution Frame (ODF).
  8. Coil the excess length of optical fibers around the fiber spool, as shown in 2 in Figure 12-24.
  9. Bundle optical fibers every 150 mm (5.91 in.) and secure them to the cable tray.
  10. Attach permanent labels 20 mm (0.79 in.) from both ends of each optical fiber.

NOTE:

If the subcard is densely populated with interfaces, lay the optical fibers from the two sides, preventing the subcard from being obstructed.
