Updating a GTL File

Updating a GTL File

Activating a GTL file matching the system software allows the GTL-controlled resource and function items to be used.

Applicable Environment

If the resource and function items in a GTL file on a device cannot meet service requirements, a new GTL file needs to be applied for. This prevents services from being interrupted.

If the obtained GTL file does not meet your requirements, configure the file to be invalid, and then apply for and activate a new GTL file meeting your requirements.

If a device has an Active Main Board (AMB) and a Standby Main Board (SMB), the AMB and the SMB use the same GTL file. Before the upgrade, check whether the main boards need a new GTL. If the main boards need a new GTL but the license is not applied for, the GTL-controlled services cannot be used.

On a device using a GTL, if one main board is faulty and is replaced with a new one, the existing GTL can continue to run for 60 days before expiration.

NOTE:

This feature is supported only on the Admin-VS but takes effect on all VSs.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before updating a GTL file, complete the following tasks:
  • Applying for a GTL file
  • Logging in to a device where the GTL file needs to be updated

Configuration Procedures

Perform the following steps to configure.

Checking the GTL File Before Updating It

The ESNs on the AMB and SMB must be the same as the ESN field in the GTL file to be activated.

Applicable Environment

To add license-control resource or function items to a device, a corresponding GTL file needs to be applied for. You can use the display license esn command to get the ESN information of the device used to apply for the GTL file.

If the value of the ESN field in the GTL file is ANY, the GTL file can be used on the main boards of any device.

NOTE:
  • A new GTL file is needed when the current version will be upgraded to a later R or V version.

  • Ensure that the new GTL file matches the system software.

  • Changing the GTL file and then saving it is prohibited, because this may affect service operation or cause the GTL file to become unavailable.

Procedure

  1. You can open the GTL file by using the notepad program to check whether the ESN in the GTL file is the same as that of the AMB and SMB.

To view features defined in a GTL file, open the GTL file using the notepad program. Items in the Resource and Function fields in the license file indicate resource and function items controlled by the license file.

  2. Prepare the environment of upgrading the system software using FTP or TFTP. The current resource file can be backed up and the new resource file can be uploaded.

When upgrading the system software using FTP, note the following points:

    • If the device to be upgraded functions as a client and the PC functions as a server, install FTP server software on the PC. The software needs to be purchased and installed separately.
    • If the device to be upgraded functions as a server and the PC functions as a client, you do not need to install FTP server software on the PC. The device to be upgraded can provide the FTP server function. By default, the FTP server function is disabled on the device to be upgraded. To enable it, run the ftp server enable command in the system view.

When upgrading the system software using TFTP, you must install TFTP server software on the PC. This is because the device to be upgraded can only function as a client and does not provide the TFTP server function.

Uploading the GTL File

The GTL file that has been applied for can be activated only after the file has been uploaded to the storage medium on a device.

Context

Before uploading the GTL file, ensure that there is sufficient space in the storage medium for saving the GTL file on the AMB and SMB.

NOTE:
  • Ensure that the GTL files on the AMB and SMB are the same. Otherwise, the upgrade will fail.
  • Ensure that the GTL files to be uploaded are correct by checking the file size and date information.

Procedure

  • Run one of the following commands as required:

    • When the current GTL file on the device used to save GTL file is the file you need:

In the user view, run the license export file-name command to save the GTL file to the root directory on the storage device.

    • When the current GTL file on the device used to save GTL file is not the file you need:

      1. Upload the GTL file to the storage medium of the AMB. For detailed procedures, see File System Management.
      2. In the user view, run the copy source-filename destination-filename command to copy the GTL file to the storage medium of the SMB.

(Optional) Checking the GTL File

During device upgrade, check the availability of the GTL file on the device before activating it to ensure that the GTL file is successfully activated.

Procedure

  1. Run license verify file-name

The license file on the master main control board is verified.

Activating the GTL File

By activating the GTL file, you can use relevant service module on the device.

Context

You can use the display license command to view detailed information about the activated GTL file on the device.

Generally, you need to update the license file in the following scenarios to ensure the device performance:
  • A new feature needs to be supported on the device.

  • The device performance needs to be optimized.

  • The current version needs to be debugged.

  • Expiration of the feature on trial:
    • To enable or disable the resource item trial function, run the license trial resource { enable | disable } command in the user view. To display information about the resource item on trial, run the display license trial resource command.

Before updating the GTL file, revoke the existing GTL file on the device. Then, the device returns an error code. The GTL error code indicates that the license key is invalid and a new GTL file can be applied for.

Procedure

  • Run license active file-name

file-name specifies the GTL file to be activated. The GTL file is in the *.dat or *.zip format.

The GTL file is activated so that corresponding specifications are available.

  • Run license revokelicense active file-name

    1. The existing GTL file is revoked on the master main control board.

    2. The GTL file is activated so that corresponding specifications are available.

file-name specifies the GTL file to be activated. The GTL file is in the *.dat or *.zip format.
      NOTE:

Before activating the GTL file, upload the new GTL file to the device. For the detailed procedure, see Uploading the GTL File.

(Optional) Deleting GTL Files

During device maintenance, you can delete unwanted or useless license files in the $_license directory.

Procedure

  1. In the user view, run the license delete file-name command to delete a specified license file in the $_license directory.

This configuration works towards deleting specified license files in the $_license directory only.

(Optional) Enabling the Emergency State of a GTL File

Enabling the emergency state of a global trotter license (GTL) file is to use the maximum specifications of a module with dynamic resource items in the system.

Context

This function applies to the following scenarios:

  • A GTL file of the Comm version has been activated and is in the Normal state.

  • A GTL file of the Demo version has been activated and is in the Demo state.

  • A GTL file of the Comm or Demo version has been activated and is in the Trial state.

Procedure

  1. In the user view, run license emergency

The emergency state of the GTL file is enabled.

    NOTE:
After you enable the emergency state, pay attention to the following items:
    • The emergency state cannot be manually disabled.
    • For each device version, the emergency state can be enabled only three times, with a 7-day validity period each time.
    • The emergency state of a GTL file can be re-enabled only when the previous emergency state has expired or on the last day before the previous emergency state expires.

Verifying the Configuration of Updating a GTL File

After the GTL file has been activated, check whether the GTL file is successfully updated.

Prerequisites

The GTL file has been activated.

Procedure

  • Run the dir command in the user view to check whether the uploaded GTL file (*.dat or *.zip ) is included in the file information displayed on the AMB and SMB.
  • Run the display license command to check the GTL file name and product version to see whether the GTL file is the needed one.
  • Run the display license esn command to check the equipment serial number (ESN) of the running GTL license file in the current system.
  • Run the display license revoke-ticket command to check the invalidation code of the current invalid license file.
  • Run the display license state command to check the status of the license for the master main control board.

Example

Run the dir command, and you can view information about files in the storage medium on the AMB and SMB.
