ATM Features Supported by the NE40E

ATM features, such as Inverse Multiplexing for ATM (IMA) groups and ATM cell transport, are supported. Using an ATM feature in a suitable scenario simplifies configurations and improves performance of ATM networks.

ATM Features and Usage Scenarios

Table 12-1 lists ATM features and usage scenarios. Each feature can be used in a specified scenario to improve performance.

IMA

IMA is a technology that allows a sender to distribute ATM cell streams over multiple low-speed links, and allows a receiver to multiplex the links to restore the cell streams.

An IMA group is a logical link consisting of one or more physical links. It provides more bandwidth (approximately equal to the sum of the bandwidths of all member links) than a single link.

Currently, ATM cell transport is applicable only to IP RANs. For information about usage scenarios of ATM cell transport, see the chapter "ATM IMA Configuration" in the Configuration Guide - WAN Access.

ATM cell transport

ATM cell transport is a technology that transmits ATM cells over Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) VCs.

By interconnecting ATM network resources over a packet switched network (PSN), ATM cell transport emulates conventional ATM services when they are being transmitted over the PSN. This allows terminal users to be unaware of network differences, and therefore protects carriers' investment during network convergence and construction.

Currently, ATM cell transport is applicable only to IP RANs. For information about usage scenarios of ATM cell transport, see the chapter "VPWS Configuration" in the Configuration Guide - VPN.

NOTE:
IPoA scenarios do not support IMA or ATM cell transport.
