Configuring PW OAM to Detect Public Network Link Faults

Configuring PW OAM to Detect Public Network Link Faults

PW OAM includes Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) OAM and MPLS OAM. PW OAM can quickly detect PW faults, enabling speedy PW switchovers for service protection.

Context

PW OAM improves the reliability and maintainability of bearer networks. PW OAM can be classified as:
  • MPLS-TP OAM: a mechanism for effectively detecting, identifying, and locating faults on the MPLS-TP user plane. When a fault occurs on a link or node, MPLS-TP OAM triggers services to switch to another link for transmission. MPLS-TP OAM can detect faults on PWs carried over bidirectional LSPs and collect performance statistics about these PWs.
  • MPLS OAM: a mechanism for detecting faults on the MPLS user plane. MPLS OAM provides users with PW status information without relying on any network plane. In addition, MPLS OAM provides network administrators and maintenance engineers with a variety of diagnostic interfaces for them to measure network performance and maintain networks.
NOTE:
NE only support MPLS-TP OAM protection function.
NOTE:

On a network with both PW APS and PW OAM protection, PW APS will fail if you delete PW OAM (MPLS OAM or MPLS-TP OAM).

Procedure

  • Configure MPLS-TP OAM to detect PW faults.

Perform the following steps on the endpoint PEs of the primary and secondary PWs:

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run mpls-tp meg meg-name

A maintenance entity group (MEG) is created, and the MEG view is displayed.

    3. Run me l2vc peer-ip peer-ip vc-id vc-id vc-type vc-type [ remote-peer-ip remote-peer-ip | ttl ttl-number ] mep-id mep-id remote-mep-id remote-mep-id [ gal { 13 | 14 } ]

A maintenance entity (ME) is created and bound to a single-segment or multi-segment PW.

    4. Run cc send enable

The function to send continuity check messages (CCMs) is enabled.

    5. Run cc receive enable

The function to receive CCMs is enabled.

    6. Run quit

      Return to the system view.

    7. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  • Configure MPLS OAM to detect PW faults.

Perform the following steps on the endpoint PEs of the primary and secondary PWs:

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run mpls

      The MPLS view is displayed.

    3. Run mpls oam

      MPLS OAM is enabled globally.

By default, MPLS OAM is not enabled globally.

    4. Run quit

      Return to the system view.

    5. Run mpls-oam

The MPLS OAM view is displayed.

    6. Run mpls oam l2vc peer-ip peer-ip vc-id vc-id vc-type vc-type [remote-peer-ip remote-peer-ip remote-vc-id remote-vc-id remote-vc-type remote-vc-type ] type { cv | ffd frequency ffd-fre } [ auto-protocol [ overtime overtime ] ]

MPLS OAM parameters are configured on the endpoints of the PW.

The PW to be detected can be either a single-segment or a multi-segment PW. If the PW to be detected is a multi-segment PW, configure the remote-peer-ip, remote-vc-id, and remote-vc-type parameters.

    7. (Optional) Run mpls oam l2vc enable { send | receive } peer-ip peer-ip vc-id vc-id vc-type vc-type

MPLS OAM is enabled on the endpoints of the PW.

By default, MPLS OAM is not enabled on the endpoints of the PW.

      NOTE:

If you want to manually send or receive CCMs, do not configure the auto-protocol parameter in the mpls oam l2vc command. Instead, run the mpls oam l2vc enable command to enable OAM on the endpoints of the PW.

    8. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.
