"This operation would violate a virtual machine affinity/anti-affinity rule" Is Displayed When a VM Is Started

Symptom

When a user starts a virtual machine (VM) on the vCenter, the message "This operation would violate a virtual machine affinity/anti-affinity rule" is displayed, as shown in Figure 3-6.

Figure 3-6 Error message

Possible Causes

An affinity or anti-affinity rule has been configured for a VM. However, the user does not follow the rule to deploy the VM.

Fault Diagnosis

  • The user does not follow the preset affinity or anti-affinity rule to deploy the VM.
    1. Log in to the vCenter and choose Inventory > Hosts and Clusters. In the navigation tree on the left pane, right-click the cluster where CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1 resides and choose Edit settings from the shortcut menu. Check whether an affinity or anti-affinity rule is configured for CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1.

If information similar to that shown in Figure 3-7 is displayed, an anti-affinity rule is configured for CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1 and CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0.

    2. In the navigation tree on the left pane, select CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0. Then, on the Summary tab of the right pane, check the status of CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0.

If information similar to that show in Figure 3-8 is displayed, CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0 is started and running on the host at 192.168.90.90.

    3. In the navigation tree on the left pane, select the host at 192.168.90.90. Then, on the Virtual Machines tab of the right pane, check the VMs running on the host at 192.168.90.90.

If information similar to that show in Figure 3-9 is displayed, both CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1 and CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0 are running on the host at 192.168.90.90. To resolve this issue, perform the operations in 1.

  • If this issue occurs for other reasons, perform the operations in 5.

Procedure

The user does not follow the preset affinity or anti-affinity rule to deploy the VM.

    1. Check whether the preset affinity or anti-affinity rule suits the site requirements.

      • Yes: Go to 2.
      • No: Go to 3.

    2. Contact infrastructure maintenance engineers to migrate CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1 or CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_0 to another host. Then, go to 4.
    3. Contact infrastructure maintenance engineers to change the affinity or anti-affinity rule.
    4. Check whether the message "This operation would violate a virtual machine affinity/anti-affinity rule" is displayed when you start CGPOMU_omu_170_omu1_1.

      • Yes: No further action is required.
      • No: Go to 5.

    Contact Huawei technical support engineers.
