A SiteCall Is Initiated Successfully But Some Endpoints Fail to Join the Conference

A SiteCall Is Initiated Successfully But Some Endpoints Fail to Join the Conference

Symptom

A conference template has been defined on the endpoint web interface. Different types of conference sites (including H.323 and SIP conference sites) that belong to different service areas have been added. Conference parameters use their default values. On the network where ViewPoint 8000 series MCUs work with endpoints, a conference is initiated successfully using SiteCall. However, some sites fail to join the conference. On the web interface of the SMC2.0 or ResourceManager (RM), the message "Capability exchange failed." is displayed.

Possible Causes

The possible causes are as follows:

  • The endpoint has joined another conference.
  • The endpoint fails to register with the SC.
  • The network between the endpoint and the MCU is unavailable.
  • The endpoint's number displayed in the conference list is different from the number configured for the endpoint.
  • The capabilities of the endpoint are lower than the capabilities required by the conference scheduling policies on the SMC2.0 or RM. The capabilities are the bandwidth, video protocol, video format, and audio protocol.
  • The encryption parameters of the endpoint may be incorrect.

Procedure

  1. Verify that the endpoint is not in another conference.
  2. Ensure that the endpoint successfully registers with the SC.
  3. Log in to the web interface of the endpoint, choose Maintenance > System Status, and check the endpoint registration status in Line Status.
  4. Ensure that the endpoint is properly connected to the MCU.
  5. Log in to the web interface of the endpoint, choose Maintenance > Diagnostics. In the Network Test area, enter the IP addresses of the MCU boards one by one in the IP Address text box, and check whether each IP address can be successfully pinged.
  6. Ensure that the endpoint's number displayed in the conference list is the same as the number configured for the endpoint.

    1. Log in to the ongoing conference page of the SMC, and check the protocol and number of the endpoint in the conference.
    2. Log in to the web interface of the endpoint, choose Maintenance > System Information, and check the registered protocol and number of the endpoint.
    3. Check whether the protocol and number displayed on the SMC are the same as those on the web interface of the endpoint.

  7. Check the capabilities of the endpoint.

    1. Log in to the web interface of the endpoint, choose Maintenance > System Information, and check the values of Audio, Video, and Interface/Bandwidth.

Check the actual capabilities (bandwidth, video protocol, video format, and audio protocol) of the endpoint.

    2. Log in to the web interface of the SMC2.0 or RM, view the capabilities negotiated between the MCU and the endpoint. Ensure that the negotiated capabilities do not exceed the endpoint's actual capabilities.
      • On the RM web interface: Enter an ongoing conference and double-click a participant to view its capabilities that have been adjusted by the RM scheduling policy.
      • On the SMC2.0 web interface: Under Scheduled Conference, select an endpoint, click View and Diagnose, select Active Participant Details , and view the value of Participant Capability under Participant Details.
    3. On the web interface of the SMC2.0 or RM, modify the capabilities that have been predefined for the participant on the participant management page. Ensure that the capabilities (bandwidth, video protocol, and video format) of the conference do not exceed the endpoint's actual capabilities.

  8. Ensure that the encryption parameter setting of the conference matches that of the endpoint.

    1. View the encryption parameter setting of the conference.

On the SiteCall page of the endpoint, check the value of H.235 conference, as shown in Figure 1-1.

      • If H.235 conference is set to Insecure conference, the H.235 encryption parameter on the endpoint that has been added to the conference as a participant must be set to Disabled or Maximum interconnectivity.
      • If H.235 conference is set to Secure media conference, the H.235 encryption parameter on the endpoint that has been added to the conference as a participant must be set to Enabled or Maximum interconnectivity.

    2. View the encryption parameter setting on the endpoint.

Log in to the web interface of the endpoint and check the encryption parameter setting as follows:

      • TE series endpoints: Choose System Settings > Security > Encryption and check the value of Encryption, as shown in Figure 1-2.
Figure 1-2 Encryption mode for TE series endpoints
      • ViewPoint 9000 series endpoints: Choose System Settings > Network > Security and Services > Others and check the value of H.235 encryption, as shown in Figure 1-3.

Summary

Manageable participants on the SMC2.0 will not encounter this problem.
