Replacing the Fan Module of the NIP6860

This section describes the fan module of the NIP6860 and the procedure for replacing the fan module.

Precautions

  • When removing an old fan module, first pull it out about 5 cm, then stop. After the fans stop rotating, continue pulling out the module.

  • The NIP6860 has two fan modules. You can replace only one fan at a time.

  • The fan modules of the NIP6860 are located at the rear of the chassis. Figure 3-20 shows a fan module.

Tools

  • ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves

  • Phillips screwdriver

Procedure

  1. Check the location of the fan module to be replaced.

    Before removing the old fan module, check its location, that is, the cabinet and chassis where the fan module resides, and label it.

  2. Put on the ESD wrist strap and connect the ground terminal to the ESD jack on the chassis.
  3. Using the Phillips screwdriver, loosen the captive screws on the fan module, as shown in Figure 3-21.
  4. Pull the upper handle upward and the lower handle downward and draw the fan module about 5 cm out of the slot, then stop. When the fan blades stop rotating, continue pulling out the fan module, as shown in Figure 3-21.

  5. Holding the upper and lower handles of the fan module, slowly insert the fan module horizontally along the guide rails in the slot until the rear of the fan module properly connects to the backplane. sing the Phillips screwdriver, fasten the fan module to the chassis by tightening the captive screws, as shown in Figure 3-22.

  6. Verify that the new fan module is working properly.

    Normally, after the new fan module is inserted into the chassis, the fans inside it immediately starts drawing air from the chassis. In this case, you can check whether the new fan module is working properly in the following ways:
    • Check the FAN indicator on the panel of the fan module. If it is green, the fan module is working normally. If the indicator is red, the fan module is not working normally.
    • Run the display fan command on the console interface to view the running status of the fan module. The fan module is working normally if the following is displayed:

    The preceding command output indicates that the new fan module is normal. If the new fan module fails to work normally, contact Huawei technical personnel.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the fan module, collect all tools. If the replaced fan module is faulty, fill in the Repair Transmission Sheet and send the faulty module with the Repair Transmission Sheet to the equipment supplier or the specified repair service provider.
