Configuring BGP to Import and Advertise OP-Routes

Context

According to the conventional data packet forwarding rules, ME devices may use routes with high cost but poor quality to forward data packets.

The centralized route control solution can address this problem. With this solution, the controller learns routes from the ISP, selects the optimal routes (OP-routes), and delivers the OP-routes to forwarding devices though a NETCONF interface. Upon receipt of the OP-routes, the forwarding devices store them in their routing tables and use BGP to advertise them. Then data packets can be forwarded along the OP-routes.

Perform the following steps on each forwarding device:

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring BGP to import and advertise OP-routes, complete the following tasks:
  • Configure the controller to deliver OP-routes to forwarding devices though a NETCONF interface.

  • Configure a unicast routing protocol to ensure that the controller and forwarding devices can communicate with each other through routes.

Procedure

  1. Configure BGP to import OP-routes.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run bgp as-number

      The BGP view is displayed.

    3. (Optional) Run ipv4-family unicast

      The BGP-IPv4 unicast address family view is displayed.

    4. Run import-route op-route [ med med | route-policy route-policy-name ] *

      BGP is configured to import OP-routes.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  2. (Optional) Configure the hold time for the NETCONF connection between the forwarding device and the controller.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run ip op-route hold-timer hold-timer

      The hold time is configured for the NETCONF connection between the forwarding device and the controller.

      When a forwarding device receives a message from the controller, the forwarding device starts the hold timer to maintain the NETCONF connection with the controller. If the forwarding device fails to receive another message from the controller within the hold time, the forwarding device considers the NETCONF connection with the controller disconnected, deletes all the OP-routes delivered by the controller, and renegotiates with the controller for OP-routes.

    3. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  3. (Optional) Configure a routing policy for BGP to advertise OP-routes.

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run bgp as-number

      The BGP view is displayed.

    3. (Optional) Run ipv4-family unicast

      The BGP-IPv4 unicast address family view is displayed.

    4. Run filter-policy { acl-number | acl-name acl-name | ip-prefix ip-prefix-name } export op-route

      A routing policy has been configured for BGP to advertise OP-routes.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

Checking the Configurations

Run the display ip op-route routing-table [ vpn-instance vpn-instance-name ] [ destination-address [ mask-length ] ] command to check the OP-routes in the OP-route routing table, including selected and non-selected OP-routes.
