Configuring an Ethernet Interface on an MPU

After being configured, an Ethernet interface on an MPU can connect the device to the network management station (workstation) for management.

Usage Scenario

The Ethernet interface on an MPU connects the device to the workstation for management.

NOTE:

The management Ethernet interface on an MPU cannot forward services.

Configuring the Working Mode for an Ethernet Interface

An Ethernet interface works in either half-duplex or full-duplex mode at the physical layer of an Ethernet network. To ensure communication between devices, configure a proper working mode for an Ethernet interface.

Context

Perform the following steps on the ME device:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface gigabitethernet interface-number

    The specified Ethernet interface view is displayed.

  3. Run duplex { auto | half | full }

    The working mode is configured for the Ethernet interface.

    Ethernet optical interfaces work only in full-duplex mode.

    NOTE:
    • When connecting to a hub, an Ethernet interface on the ME device must work in half-duplex mode because hubs work only in half-duplex mode.
    • When connecting to a LAN switch, an Ethernet interface on the ME device can work in either full-duplex or half-duplex mode.
    • Ethernet interfaces on the local and peer devices must work in the same mode.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Configuring the Working Rate for an Ethernet Electrical Interface

The volume of traffic that can be transmitted on an Ethernet electrical interface is determined by the working rate of the interface. To ensure communication between devices, set a proper working rate for Ethernet electrical interfaces.

Context

Perform the following steps on the ME device:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface gigabitethernet interface-number

    The specified Ethernet interface view is displayed.

  3. Run speed { auto | 10 | 100 | 1000 }

    The working rate is set for the GE electrical interface.

    The working rate of the Ethernet electrical interface on the ME device can be 10 Mbit/s, 100 Mbit/s, or 1000 Mbit/s.

    The default working rate of an Ethernet electrical interface is auto, which means that the working rate is automatically negotiated by the system.

    You can forcibly set the working rate for an interface but ensure that the specified working rate of the interface must be identical with that on the peer device to which the interface is connected.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Configuring the Promiscuity Mode

The promiscuity mode of an interface determines how the ME60 receives frames from the physical layer.

Context

Perform the following steps on the ME devices:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface gigabitethernet interface-number

    The specified GE interface view is displayed.

  3. Run promode { on | off }

    The Promiscuity mode is set.

  4. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Verifying the Ethernet Interface Configuration

After an Ethernet interface is configured on an MPU, you can view information about the IP address, MTU, working rate, working mode, and interface type of the Ethernet interface, and statistics about packets sent and received on the interface.

Procedure

  • Run the display interface gigabitethernet [ interface-number ] command to check the status of the specified Ethernet interface on the MPU.

Example

Run the display interface gigabitethernet interface-number command. The command output shows the MTU, IP address, mask, working rate, and working mode of the Ethernet interface on the MPU.
