Configuring Virtual Access Fast Switching

This section describes how to configure virtual access fast switching to improve primary/secondary switchover performance in a virtual access scenario.

Context

When an AP is dual-homed to a primary and a secondary master, the masters negotiate the primary/secondary status through the Diameter channel. By default, the link protocol status of a virtual access interface on the secondary master is Down. When the virtual access interface is in the blocked state, it cannot forward data. If the primary master fails, a primary/secondary switchover is triggered. Routes must be regenerated and advertised when services are switched to the secondary master, because the link protocol status of the virtual access interface on the secondary master is Down. This process results in poor performance. To resolve this issue, run the virtual-access pw backup-interface-block command to set the link protocol status of the virtual access interface on the secondary master to Up. After the command is run, the virtual access interface remains in the blocked state, which ensures that the secondary master does not forward data. After services are switched to the secondary master, the virtual access interface enters the non-blocked state. Routes do not need to be regenerated and advertised because the link protocol status of the virtual access interface is always Up, implementing fast service switching.

Perform the following procedure on both the primary and secondary masters, because the primary/secondary status is determined by masters through negotiation and may change.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring virtual access fast switching, complete the following tasks:

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run one of the following commands:

    • interface interface-type interface-number
    • interface eth-trunk trunk-id remote

    The virtual access interface view or virtual access Eth-Trunk interface view is displayed.

  3. Run virtual-access pw backup-interface-block

    The link protocol status of the virtual access interface on the secondary master is set to Up, but the virtual access interface remains in the blocked state.

  4. Run one of the following commands:

    • direct-route track virtual-access degrade-cost cost-value
    • direct-route ipv6 track virtual-access degrade-cost cost-value

    The cost of an IPv4 or IPv6 direct route on the virtual access interface is associated with the blocked state of the virtual access interface.

    When the link protocol status of the virtual access interface on the secondary master is Up, the direct route on the virtual access interface is advertised. In this case, downstream traffic from the network side to the user side may be transmitted to the secondary master for forwarding. However, the virtual access interface on the secondary master remains in the blocked state, which results in the loss of downstream traffic. To resolve this issue, perform this step to associate the cost of the direct route on the virtual access interface with the blocked state of the virtual access interface.

    • When the virtual access interface is in the blocked state, the cost of the direct route on the interface is set to the value specified by cost-value.

    • When the virtual access interface is in the non-blocked state, the cost of the direct route on the interface is restored to the default value 0.

    After another routing protocol imports the direct route, the protocol inherits the cost of the direct route. In this situation, the priority of a route with the virtual access interface as the outbound interface on the secondary master decreases, which prevents downstream traffic from being forwarded through the secondary master.

  5. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Follow-up Procedure

Configure other routing protocols to import the direct route, so that the change to the cost of the direct route affects these routing protocols' route selection results. When a dynamic routing protocol imports the direct route, the protocol automatically inherits the direct route's cost. You must perform either of the following operations to create an IPv4 or IPv6 static route as required, so that the static route inherits the direct route's cost when being iterated to the direct route:

  • Create an IPv4 static route in a public network instance: ip route-static ip-address { mask | mask-length } { nexthop-address | vpn-instance vpn-instance-name nexthop-address } [ preference preference | tag tag ] * inherit-cost [ description text ]

  • Create an IPv4 static route in a VPN instance: ip route-static vpn-instance vpn-source-name ip-address { mask | mask-length } vpn-instance vpn-destination-name nexthop-address [ preference preference | tag tag ] * inherit-cost [ description text ]

  • Create an IPv6 static route in a public network instance: ipv6 route-static dest-ipv6-address prefix-length [ vpn-instance vpn-instance-name ] nexthop-ipv6-address [ preference preference | tag tag ] * inherit-cost [ description text ]

  • Create an IPv6 static route in a VPN instance: ipv6 route-static vpn-instance vpn-source-name dest-ipv6-address prefix-length { vpn-instance vpn-destination-name dest-ipv6-address | dest-ipv6-address [ public ] } [ preference preference | tag tag ] * inherit-cost [ description text ]

Checking the Configurations

After configuring virtual access fast switching, check the configurations.

  • Run the display virtual-access va-pw [ ap ap-id | state { up | down } | interface interface-type interface-number ] [ remote ] command on the secondary master to view the *client interface field and check that the link protocol status of the virtual access interface is Up.

  • Run the display ip routing-table or display ipv6 routing-table command on the secondary master to check that the value of the Cost field of the direct route for the virtual access interface is the value specified by degrade-cost cost-value.
