DB Instances

DB Instances

DB instance is the smallest management unit used by RDS. Each instance is an isolated database environment in the cloud and can be classified as one of the following:

  • Single instance:
  • Primary and standby instance
  • Read replica

A single instance contains one VM, while the active and standby instances contain two VMs. The read replica contains one VM and belongs to a single, primary, or standby instance. You can use RDS to create and manage DB instances running various database engines (DB engines).

  • RDS for MySQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, and RDS for Microsoft SQL Server support both single instances and primary/standby instances.
  • A maximum of five read replicas can be created for RDS for MySQL and RDS for PostgreSQL.
  • RDS for Microsoft SQL Server does not support read replicas.
