What Is Power Cloud Server?

A Power Cloud Server (PCS), also called Power VM, is a computing server provided by HMC. It features on-demand allocation and auto scaling. By interconnecting Power Service with the Power resource pool, PCSs can be centrally managed on ManageOne.

AIX Image

An AIX image is an Elastic Cloud Server (ECS) template that contains software and mandatory configurations. Specifically, an image contains an operating system (OS) and may also contain proprietary software and application software, such as database software. You can use an AIX image to create a PCS or convert a PCS into an AIX image.

Power Region and AZ

A region is a geographic area where resources used by your PCSs are located. Creating PCSs in different regions can better suit user requirements. For example, applications can be designed to meet user requirements in specific regions or comply with local laws or regulations. PCS pricing also changes based on region.

Each region contains many availability zones (AZs) where power and networks are physically isolated. AZs in the same region can communicate with each other over the intranet. Each AZ provides cost-effective and low-latency network connections that are unaffected by any possible faults in other AZs. Therefore, deploying ECSs in separate AZs protects your applications against faults that may occur in a specific location.


PCS has the following advantages:

  • PCS provides cost-effective high-performance computing services to bear customers' key businesses.
  • Users can apply for PCSs on the Power Service management console by themselves.

Application Scenarios

Power Service applies to enterprises that have requirements on unified management of Power VMs and legacy IT assets.

  • Applications:

    Development and test scenarios of key service systems and Power VMs in an enterprise.

  • Characteristics:

    PCSs are suitable for applications that have no special requirements on vCPU performance, memory, disk capacity, or bandwidth, but have high requirements on security and reliability. They feature low initial investment and maintenance costs.

Access node


Collects service data from the Power resource pool and delivers operation instructions.

Figure 42-3 shows the workflow of Power Service.

  1. VDC administrators or VDC operators apply for Power resources from the ManageOne operation plane. Power Service delivers the operation requests to PowerService for processing.
  2. PowerManager delivers the processed operation requests to the resource pool for execution.

Accessing and Using Power Service

FusionCloud provides a web-based service management platform, that is, the ManageOne operation plane.

Users can use the ManageOne operation plane to access the cloud service. If you are a VDC administrator, VDC operator, or have the operation rights for the cloud service, you can directly log in to the ManageOne operation plane and choose this cloud service on the Product List or Console menu.
