ISSU is not supported on a switch in a CSS. Therefore, commands in this chapter cannot be configured on such a switch.

display issu backup state

Function

The display issu backup state command displays the status of data backup between the new master MPU and old master MPU.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

In ISSU start phase, you can use the display issu backup state command to view the status of data backup between the new master MPU and old master MPU to determine whether to switch the ISSU plane. ISSU plane switching is available only when the system is in real-time backup state.

ISSU enables the new master MPU and old master MPU to perform batch backup in three phases. Each service module backs up specific data in specific phases.
  1. Phase 1: Before the global configuration is restored, the system backs up the data required for restoring the global configuration.

  2. Phase 2: After the global configuration is restored and before the interface board configuration is restored, the system backs up the global data and data required for restoring the interface board configuration.

  3. Phase 3: After the interface board configuration is restored, the system backs up interface-related dynamic data.

Prerequisites

The issu check command has been used to enable the system to enter the ISSU check phase.

Usage Scenario

In ISSU start phase, you can use the display issu backup-result command to view the result of data backup in each phase.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

After the ISSU check process is complete, you can run the display issu check-result command to check the ISSU modes supported by the system and maximum service interruption time.

The switch supports lossy ISSU. In lossy ISSU mode, the configuration of the old master MPU is synchronized to the new master MPU, and the configuration of the old process of a card is synchronized to the new process of the card. Dynamic data information, however, is not synchronized.

Prerequisites

After you use the issu check command to perform ISSU check, you can use the display issu check-result command to view the check result.

The display issu recover-configuration command displays the commands of which the configurations fail to be restored. You can manually restore the configurations of these commands.

You can run the display issu recover-configuration command for non-ISSU upgrade. During ISSU, this command can only be used on the new master MPU.

In ISSU switchover phase, you can use the display issu switch-result command to view the result of plane switchover in each phase.

ISSU plane switchover goes through four phases: switchover check, switchover preparation, data smoothing, and data aging. The switchover preparation phase is also called the forwarding plane switchover phase.

Prerequisites

After you use the issu check command to perform ISSU check, you can use the display issu switch-result command.

Usage Guidelines

Before ISSU, you can use the display issu timer rollback command to view the value of the ISSU rollback timer. During ISSU, you can use the display issu timer rollback command to view the value and remaining time of the ISSU rollback timer.

Usage Guidelines

During ISSU, you can run the issu abort command to abort ISSU. When the command is run in different situations, the command has different impacts on the system:
  • If you run the issu abort command before the standby MPU running the new version resets, the system exits ISSU.

  • If you run the issu abort command after the standby MPU running the new version resets and before the ISSU plane is successfully switched, the standby MPU rolls back to the old version, and the system exits ISSU.

  • If you run the issu abort command after the ISSU plane is successfully switched, the system cannot roll back and prompts that ISSU cannot be aborted.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

If you run the issu check command in real-time backup phase, the system enters the ISSU check phase.

In the ISSU check phase, the system performs resource check and compatibility check to determine whether the upgrade can be performed. ISSU resource check is performed to check whether the current system resources support ISSU. ISSU compatibility check is performed to determine the upgrade mode used on each card (common restart mode or fast restart mode).

Prerequisites

The system software to be upgraded has been uploaded to all MPUs.

Configuration Impact

The ISSU check affects the system in the following aspects:
  • Operational and configuration commands except ISSU commands and some query commands will be shielded. You can enter a question mark (?) to check which commands can be executed.

  • The standby MPU restarts using the new version and becomes the new master MPU.

  • The ISSU rollback timer is activated. You can adjust the ISSU rollback timer value during ISSU. If the timer expires before ISSU is complete, ISSU may fail and then the system will roll back to the old version.

NOTE:
Before the ISSU check phase ends, you can press Ctrl+C to abort ISSU. Then the system continues ISSU check until ISSU check finishes. You cannot continue ISSU but only run the issu abort command to exit ISSU.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

If you confirm that ISSU is successful and version rollback is not required, run the issu confirm command to enter the ISSU confirm phase. In this phase, the old master MPU restarts using the new version, and the system clears temporary data generated during ISSU and finishes ISSU.

Prerequisites

The issu switchover command has been used to switch the ISSU plane.

Configuration Impact

After the issu confirm command is executed, the new system software is specified as the software for the next startup. The ISSU is complete.

Function

The issu precheck command enables the system to perform in-service software upgrade (ISSU) precheck. This helps determine whether ISSU can be performed.

Usage Guidelines

Before an ISSU upgrade, run this command to perform an ISSU precheck and determine whether the current system resources (software version, number of VTY users, and memory space on the cards) and card type support ISSU. If the current software version does not support ISSU or there are more than one VTY user in the system, the system stops the precheck and the ISSU upgrade cannot be performed. If a card does not have sufficient memory space, this card does not respond to the ISSU instructions and must be upgraded by resetting it.

The ISSU precheck hardly affect system operation and can be performed at any time except in an ISSU process.

Different from issu check, the issu precheck command only checks whether the current system resources and card type support ISSU. The displayed upgrade type in the check resource may not be the final upgrade type used on the cards. The final upgrade type will be displayed in the check result after you run the issu check command.

NOTE:
After the system starts ISSU, you can press Ctrl+C to abort ISSU. Then the system aborts ISSU. You cannot continue to switch the ISSU plane but only run the issu abort command to exit ISSU.

Info: The Lossy ISSU process will start. Continue? [Y/N]:

  • If you enter y, the system starts lossy ISSU.

  • If you enter n, the system aborts the execution of the issu start command and waits for the next operation:
    • To continue ISSU, run the issu start command according to the prompt before the ISSU rollback timer expires.

    • To abort ISSU, run the issu abort command.

    • If you do not run the issu start or issu abort command, the system rolls back and exits ISSU after the ISSU rollback timer expires.

issu switchover

Function

The issu switchover command configures the system to switch the ISSU plane.

Switches the ISSU plane forcibly. If this parameter is specified, the ISSU plane is forcibly switched even if data backup errors are detected during ISSU check. Otherwise, the system prompts you whether to continue the ISSU plane switchover.

Usage Guidelines

Usage Scenario

You can run the issu switchover command to switch the ISSU plane. The switchover process includes switchover check, forwarding plane switchover (switchover preparation), data smoothing, and data aging. Before the ISSU plane switchover, if errors occur during data backup, you are prompted to perform the forcible switchover; if data backup is found incomplete, you can prompted to perform the command later.
NOTE:
  • The ISSU plane switchover will interrupt a Telnet connection for 30s. Wait for 30s and then press Enter to re-log in to the device for ISSU.

  • After you run the issu confirm command to confirm ISSU and restart the old master MPU using the new version, check the status of the master MPU and standby MPU again. Then you can find that the new master MPU is in Master state because the hardware switchover has completed.

Prerequisites

Before you use the issu switchover command to switch ISSU plane, the issu start command has been used to start ISSU and ISSU is in real-time backup state.

issu timer rollback

Function

The issu timer rollback command sets the ISSU rollback timer value.

The value is an integer ranging from 60 to 2880, in minutes. The default value is 120 minutes.

Usage Guidelines

After the system enters the ISSU check phase, the ISSU rollback timer is automatically activated. If the timer expires in different situations, the system uses different processing methods:
  • If the timer expires before the standby MPU restarts using the new version, the system considers that you abort ISSU and exits ISSU.

  • If the timer expires after the standby MPU restarts using the new version and before the ISSU plane is successfully switched, the system considers that you abort ISSU, the standby MPU rolls back to the old version, and then the system aborts ISSU.

  • If the timer expires after the ISSU plane is successfully switched, the system extends the upgrade time and considers that ISSU is successful by default.

Before the ISSU plane is switched, you can run the issu timer rollback command to reset the ISSU rollback timer value. In ISSU confirm phase, if ISSU is confirmed successful, the ISSU rollback timer is automatically disabled.
