Clock Signal Transmission Modes

A master clock can transmit clock signals over Ethernet links. Other devices use their clock chip to read these signals, and then trace and lock the master clock. This is the most commonly used clock synchronization mode because it does not require a dedicated clock synchronization network.

As shown in Figure 13-5, the Ethernet interfaces of the external clock, Device1, Device2, and Device3 are connected over Ethernet links. Device1 traces the external clock, Device2 traces the clock of Device1, and Device3 traces the clock of Device2. This ensures that the three devices synchronize the time with the external clock.
