Overview of Synchronous Ethernet

Definition

Synchronous Ethernet recovers the clock of the sender from serial data streams through the physical layer chip of Ethernet lines, and then transmits the clock frequency to downstream networks through an Ethernet. Synchronous Ethernet implements frequency synchronization on an Ethernet and transmits frequency signals on the Ethernet.

Purpose

On data communication networks, the signal sender places a pulse signal in a specific timeslot, and the receiver extracts the pulse signal from the timeslot. This ensures that the sender and receiver communicate properly. A prerequisite of successful communication between the sender and receiver is clock synchronization between them.

Traditionally, to synchronize the clock frequency on telecommunications networks, the sites on the network obtained accurate clock signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS). However, this mode has high construction and security costs.

To address this issue, synchronous Ethernet was introduced. This mode enables devices to synchronize clock frequency with other sites through an Ethernet network or obtain the optimal clock signals from lines.

Benefits

Using synchronous Ethernet, sites do not require antennas to be installed so that they can obtain the clock frequency from the GPS. This reduces network construction and maintenance and, because it is independent of using GPS, improves security.
