Overview of CFM

Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) supports continuity check (CC), loopback (LB), and linktrace (LT) functions.

Easy-to-use Ethernet techniques provide good bandwidth extensibility on low-cost hardware. Because of this, Ethernet services and structures are the best choice for many enterprise networks and wide area network (WANs). With the current ubiquity of Ethernet technology, Ethernet OAM has become more important than ever. The increasing popularity of Ethernet applications encourages operators to use improved Ethernet OAM functions to maintain and operate Ethernet networks.

Hierarchical Ethernet OAM needs to be provided based on the network architecture, as shown in Figure 8-1.

CFM defines Operations, Administration, and Management (OAM) functions, including CC, LB, and LT. CFM is used on large-scale end-to-end Ethernet networks. It monitors network connectivity and locates connectivity faults.
