Networking Requirements

As shown in Figure 14-19, devices on the bearer network work at Layer 2. PE1 and PE2 are core devices on the bearer network, and CE1 and CE2 are edge devices on the wireless access network. PE1 and PE2 function as BCs and connect to external BITS clock sources to send frequency signals and clock signals to CE1 and CE2. CE1 and CE2 function as BCs to synchronize with BITS clock signals through PTP and transmit the clock signals in PTP messages to connected NodeBs. NodeB2 does not support PTP but can obtain frequency information through E1 signals to synchronize with the frequency of CE2.

Configure PTP on the bearer network to implement frequency synchronization between NodeBs and bearer network devices. This configuration allows PTP-supporting NodeBs to synchronize with bearer network devices.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:

  1. Configure PE1 and PE2 to receive BITS clock signals through BITS interfaces.
  2. Configure the type of devices on the bearer network as BC.

  3. Configure PE1 and PE2 as system master clocks and connect them to BITS clocks. PE1 and PE2 back up each other.

  4. Configure multicast MAC encapsulation for PTP messages and set the delay measurement mechanism to delay because MAC addresses of interfaces are unknown and devices work at Layer 2.

Procedure

  1. Configure PE1 and PE2 to receive BITS clock signals through BITS interfaces.

    For configuration details, see Example for Configuring the BITS as the Master Clock Source of PTP.

  2. Configure PE1 and PE2 as BCs.

  5. Configure PE2, CE1, and CE2 according to the configuration of PE1.
  6. Verify the configuration.

    # CE1 and CE2 can trace the frequency and time signals of PE1 and PE2. If you run the display ptp all command on CE1, for example, you can view the PTP synchronization status of CE1.
