Configuring PoE Power-on and Power-off Management

Context

The device supports two power-on and power-off modes: automatic and manual.
  • In automatic mode, the interface power supply priority can be configured as critical, high, or low (in descending order). When the remaining power is insufficient, PDs with higher power supply priority are provided with power first.
  • In manual mode, you can power on or off a specified interface as required. When the remaining power is insufficient, PDs can no longer be powered on.
In addition to powering on and off PDs in automatic or manual mode, you can also:
  • Set the power-on and power-off time range.
  • Configure the device to provide power for non-standard PDs.
  • Configure the PoE standard type.

Procedure

  • Configure the PoE power management mode.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run poe power-management { auto | manual } slot slot-id

      The PoE power management mode is set.

      By default, the device uses the automatic power management mode.

      NOTE:

      Only the ES0D0G48VA00 board takes effect.

  • Configure PD power-on and power-off rules.

    • In automatic mode, configure the power supply priority of the interface. The device powers on or off the PD connected to an interface based on the power supply priority of the interface.
      1. Run system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

        The interface view is displayed.

      3. Run poe priority { critical | high | low }

        The power supply priority of the interface is set.

        By default, the power supply priority of an interface is low.

      4. (Optional) In automatic mode, when interfaces have the same power supply priority, the device does not power on or off PDs connected to the interfaces based on the interface numbers.

        A device may power off PDs connected to interfaces with larger interface numbers to power on PDs connected to interfaces with smaller interface numbers later when the device powers on or off PDs based on interface numbers. To prevent this problem, perform this step to disable the device from powering on or off PDs based on interface numbers. The device then powers on PDs in the sequence in which the PDs are connected to it.

        1. Run quit

          Return to the system view.

        2. Run poe power-policy port-index-priority disable [ all | chassis chassis-id ]

          The device is disabled from powering on or off PDs based on the interface numbers.

    • In manual mode, the PD connected to each interface is manually powered on or off. In this mode, you can power on or off a specified PD.

      1. Run system-view

        The system view is displayed.

      2. Run poe { power-on | power-off } interface interface-type interface-number

        The PD connected to the specified interface is manually powered on or off.

        NOTE:

        Only the ES0D0G48VA00 board takes effect.

  • (Optional) Set the power-off time range for a PoE interface.

    PDs connected to an interface do not keep working. You can set the power-off time range for a PoE interface so that it can automatically power off when it is idle to save energy.

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run time-range time-name { start-time to end-time days | from time1 date1 [ to time2 date2 ] }

      A power-off time range is set.

    3. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    4. Run poe power-off time-range time-range-name

      The power-off time range is applied to the interface.

      Within a specified power-off time range, if the power management mode is changed, the configured power-off time range becomes invalid. PDs are powered on according to the newly configured power management mode. For example, if the mode is changed from manual to automatic within the power-off time range, the power-off time range becomes invalid and PDs power on automatically.

  • (Optional) Configure the device to be compatible with non-standard PDs.

    When a non-standard PD is connected to the device, the device cannot detect the required resistance and cannot identify the PD. When compatibility check is enabled, the device can detect and provide power for the PD that does not comply with the 802.3af or 802.3at standard.

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    3. Run poe legacy enable

      The interface is enabled to check compatibility of non-standard PDs.

      By default, compatibility detection for PDs is disabled on an interface.

  • (Optional) Configure the PoE standard type.

    An IEEE802.3at-compliant device provides a maximum power of 30 W, and an IEEE802.3af-compliant device provides a maximum power of 15.4 W. The former device provides higher current than the latter device when they power on PDs. Some non-standard PDs cannot be powered on in high current. To power on these PDs, configure the device to provide power with low current in compliance with IEEE802.3af.

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    3. Run poe af-inrush enable

      The device is configured to provide power with low current for PDs in compliance with IEEE802.3af.

      By default, a device provides power in compliance with IEEE802.3at.

      NOTE:

      After the poe af-inrush enable command is configured, you need to remove and then install the cables connected to non-standard PDs so that the PDs can be powered on normally.

  • (Optional) Configure the power supply mode for a PoE interface.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface interface-type interface-number

      The interface view is displayed.

    3. Run poe { at-inrush | pre-bt-inrush | bt-inrush } enable

      The power supply mode is set.

      By default, interfaces supporting the PoE++ mode on devices provide power in PoE++ mode. That is, the power supply mode is bt-inrush, interfaces not supporting the PoE++ mode on devices provide power in at-inrush mode.

      NOTE:
      • The pre-bt-inrush and bt-inrush are supported only by the interfaces on the ES1D2G48VX5S and ES1D2G48VX5E board.

      • at-inrush: Sets the power supply mode to PoE+.
      • pre-bt-inrush: Sets the power supply mode to PoE++ compatible. That is, except that the PoE power is 60000 mW, interfaces comply with 802.3at.
      • bt-inrush: Sets the power supply mode to PoE++.
      • When the poe bt-inrush enable command is configured after the poe af-inrush enable command is configured in the interface, the poe af-inrush enable command configuration is automatically overwritten.
      • Changing the power supply mode of a PoE interface may power off the PDs connected to the PoE interface.
